In case you’re wondering, there are only four tracks for “At Last Alone” because the other five tracks are remixes of The Avalanches’ stuff, and the remixes suck. The Avalanches are a group from Australia whose debut CD “Since I Left You” quickly became a hip-hop classic. It also gained fame for it’s unheard of use of 1000s of samples. Enjoy.
Top Five Rappers & Producers
So the other day I was sitting in math class bored as hell, when I decided to make a list of my “Top Five Rappers”. I was actually sitting at my desk when I was doing this, with my iPod in hand so I could scroll through the list of artists and come up with some names. Right before I even began looking through the artists, I came up with three off the top of my head: Big L, Big Punisher, and Nas. At this point I was like, holy shit, this is gonna be easy. I then came up with a list of other possible candidates for the last two. These c
andidates were: Rakim, Method Man, AZ, Canibus, and 2Pac. I rationalized that although Method Man was a big player in the game he didn’t show enough prowess alone, and Rakim is a legend for sure and it’s rumored that he even produced the Eric B. & Rakim stuff but same as Meth, he just hasn’t showed his skills outside of his roots (a.k.a. Eric B. & Rakim). Then, I sat there for like, fifteen minutes trying to decide on AZ, 2Pac, and Canibus. I figured that Canibus deserves a spot after Rip the Jacker, Mic Club, etc., and that 2Pac was such a huge part to the game that he couldn’t be forgotten. Top Five Rappers: Nas, Big Punisher, Big L, 2Pac, Canibus

Surprised at how long “Top Five Rappers” took, I figured that with fifty minutes left in class a “Top Five Producers” was worth a shot. Right away, I came up with
four: DJ Premier, DJ Shadow, RJD2, and Pete Rock. I got ecstatic because I thought that this one would take me no time. But oh no. After widdling down my last to pick the fifth producer (I went through ten other producers), I came to two producers: Jay Dee and 9th Wonder. But now I’m fuckin’ stuck! I can’t decide who is better because they both kick so much ass. So I’m including them both in my list until I can pick one. Top Five Producers: DJ Premier, Pete Rock, DJ Shadow, RJD2, and Jay Dee/9th Wonder Hit me up with your “Top Five Rappers/Producers”. If you’re bored and need something to do, I guarantee this will occupy your time for quite a while.

No Rakim in Top 5 is being a reckless hip hop fan. No skills beyond his roots? Peep “The Master” & “The 18th Letter,” those are DOPE albums. Rakim is the most influential emcee skill-wise in hip-hop history. People weren’t flowing like Ra was in 1987. Check “Microphone Fiend.” Check the lyrics and the flow. Then remind yourself that that was 19 frickin 88 and try to find ONE emcee with that level and style of lyricism before that. 80% of that underground style you hear today was either directly or indirectly influenced by Rakim. No Rakim, no Nas or anyone that he influenced.

Can I just ask, are these actually instrumental versions of the avalanches records or just the originals (which are pretty much instrumental anyway)?
I already have since i left you and I’m on dial up at the minute so I was just wondering if these files are in any way different before I spend ages downloading them…
Very cool blog by the way!

dilla kicks 9th wonder’s ass.. dilla has done more versatile stuff imo.
top 5 producers (hip hop):
dilla
timbaland
madlib
rza/neptunes/k.west
kenny dope 😉
April 22nd, 2007 at 6:39 pm
blocks, I hated The Master, that shit was wood. The 18th Letter was good and so was his shit with Eric B. but I don’t think it compares to Pun in his day
April 26th, 2007 at 10:43 am
Producers:
1 Madlib
2 James Poyser
3 Jay Dee/Dilla
4 RZA
5 Kanye West
Kanye puts out a lot of crap, but he has also put out some good shit too (Brown Sugar [Fine], Jesus Walks, Get By).
Rappers:
KRS One
Canibus
Gift Of Gab
Mos Def
Black Thought
To me, it’s all about flow and delivery, of which MF Doom and Kweli are the worst. I also think about how they’d perform when during a freestyle. Common (a personal favorite) is probably the greatest rappers out there with something to say, but I think any of the rappers listed above can out perform him. Also his collabs with Kanye are starting to alienate me; the entire ‘Be’ album sounded like a bad Kanye-produced album (the rhymes were some of his best though). Other honorable mentions include: Pras, Lauryn Hill, Eminem, Method Man & Phonte (of Little Brother).

What up,
Great to see you have Canibus in your top 5 rappers. Canibus is most defintely one of the BEST lyricists of all time. Everyone has a right to there opinion, but if Canibus isn’t in ya top 5, you need to get your head checked. It’s really not that complicated folks.
Premo is definitley one of the best producers ever, period!
Out.
