It’s one thing for the masses to label an artist “strange”, but for that artist to self-nominate such a title is…well…odd. Either he is a tad off in thinking, or he is very confident of himself and his slant on creativity. Mark Morley, aka Relic the Oddity, is the latter, and his moniker couldn’t be any more perfect for what he brings to the table of musical and artistic innovation. Relic might be one of the most well rounded and dedicated artists you’ll ever have the pleasure of listening to. No stranger to the stage, his performance experience spans more than a decade, sharing the stage most recently with RA the Rugged Man, Zion-i, Pharoahe Monch and Slaughterhouse. But the musician shines just as brightly behind closed doors – of a production room, that is. To watch him in the studio is to see him split into at least five people with very specific roles to play. Whether he is behind either of his MPC, ASR or SP1200 workstations, in the booth recording written rhymes or passionately-arranged harmonies and vocals, or behind the mixing console tweaking levels and digital EQs, Relic seems to be at home in any of his studio personas. His ability to convey a sense of emotion and depth through the arrangements in each song is remarkable – and very evident in his latest full length release, The Green Light. And honing his signature sound has paid off. Combined years of production experience and an ear for unforgettable sample arrangements has afforded Relic the opportunity to produce for the likes of Sev Statik (Rawkus), two-time Grammy nominated Fresh I.E., BEC recording artist Manafest, and Juno/Polaris nominated artist Shad. Relic has been in the lab most recently with Wio-K producing his upcoming EP, and he is currently at work finishing a project with producer Scarlem D, set to be released in 2011.
