Keor Meteor has been taking the hip hop game to a new level. Keeping it alive. Branching new leaves and sculpting new paths in the scene. He’s internationally known for his instrumental tapes like “99 Cents” or “Short Music Tapes” released back in January of 2013. Emma Jean is the follow up to Fields’ widely praised first two Truth & Soul albums: 2009’s My World and 2012’s Faithful Man. She was a member of The Jewels, who in the mid 60’s were part of The James Brown Revue, and also released two 45s produced by James Brown, Although The Jewels eventually disbanded, Martha continued to be a part of the live James Brown show for the next 30 years! It’s Martha’s voice that graces JB classics such as ‘Say It Loud I’m Black & I’m Proud’ & ‘The Big Payback’ amongst many others. She also recorded a solo album, for Salsoul Records in 1979, also produced by Soul Brother Number 1, which added a touch of soulful disco to her enviable array of singing talents. ‘Soul Overdue’ is an incredibly apt title for a project that has been over 40 years in the making, and it shows that Martha’s’ voice remains undiminished, her youthful vocal clarity and style quite simply dazzles, as she shows a host of young pretenders the way it should be done!

Whether as an architect of the Stax Records sound in the sixties, the soulful Black Moses of the seventies or even as “Chef” on television’s South Park in the nineties and beyond, Isaac Hayes made a cultural impact spanning generations. The late seventies weren’t quite Hayes’ salad days, however. But even if Hayes struggled both personally and creatively during the period, it wasn’t all barren. BBR has recently remastered and expanded two of Hayes’ Polydor albums from the period following his tenures at Stax and ABC. 1978’s For the Sake of Love, in true Hayes fashion, featured just six smoldering tracks. Its diverse selections featured originals by Hayes (including the title track and the funky Top 20 R&B hit “Zeke the Freak”) plus reinventions of Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are” and James Taylor’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” and even a danceable makeover of Hayes’ own “Shaft” as “Shaft II.”

Shifting focus for the second installment of “Yasiin Gaye”, Amerigo aimed to highlight the often overlooked accomplishments of Marvin Gaye’s role as the producer.

“I wanted to build this side from more of Marvin’s original production work. He was doing a lot of what we do now, in terms of looping and pulling samples from other pre-recorded sessions decades before hip-hop made it common practice to do so. This also gave me the room to feature other artist [Chuck Berry, The Temptations, Talib, etc.] and re-present those classic Mos [Def] versus in a new context.”

Soul Mates Series:

Amerigo Gazaway’s *Soul Mates* series continues the theme of his previous work in creating collaborations that never were. On the series’ latest installment, Amerigo unites Brooklyn rapper Yasiin Bey (Mos Def) and soul legend Marvin Gaye for a dream collaboration aptly titled “Yasiin Gaye”. Building the album’s foundation from deconstructed samples of Gaye’s Motown classics, Gazaway re-purposes the instrumentation into new productions within a similar framework. Carefully weaving Bey’s tangled raps and Gaye’s soulful vocals over his new arrangements, the producer delivers a quality much closer to an authentic collaboration than a lukewarm “mashup” album.
