Believe it or not, this is an “Oldie” now. This was released on this day, May 23 1994!!!

After the release of their third album Check Your Head–which found the trio embracing their punk rock roots and deemphasizing their lyrical ability with mood music that highlighted their neo-hippie political awareness–Ill Communication found the Beastie Boys pulling together all the different styles of their previous three albums into one masterpiece.

The Beastie Boys found themselves back on top of the charts with Ill Communication. Ill Communication was produced by The Beasties and Mario C. and featured musical contributions from Money Mark, Eric Bobo and Amery “AWOL” Smith plus vocal contributions from Q-Tip and Biz Markie.

The album’s signature song was ”Sabotage” however it contained plenty of quality cuts such as “Sure Shot,” “B-Boys Makin’ With the Freak Freak,” “Root Down” and “Get It Together.” In 2009, The Beastie Boys re-released and remastered Ill Communication, adding a bonus disc of B-sides and remixes that are simply fantastic. Ill Communication went on to sell over three million records and cemented the Beastie Boys place in not only hip-hop but music history as one of the greatest groups of all time.

Not everyone who saw this 27-year-old’s spoken-word theatre show Brand New Ancients (for which she became the youngest-ever winner of the Ted Hughes prize) will be excited by the poet’s venture into hip-hop. Likewise, there are hip-hop fans already dismissing the idea of a former Brit-schooler trying her hand at MCing, no matter that Tempest spent her teenage years on the battle-rap circuit. Forget genre, though, and this unique album has much going for it. Everybody Down tells the story of three characters battling loneliness in the big city, with each song representing a new chapter. The obvious reference point is the Streets’ second album, A Grand Don’t Come for Free, although Dan Carey’s unsteadying beats leave no room for Mike Skinner’s trademark way with a chorus. Tempest shines, though, through her use of language, which illuminates the subject matter – from boardroom drug deals to vacuous parties where “everybody … has got a hyphenated second name” – to dazzling effect.

This is for those with hard heads, black lungs, and scarred hearts. It’s for the dreamers who construct darts on loose-leaf and those revolting against corporate life and casual Fridays. It’s Castle’s Return of the Gasface, released on Mello Music Group, remixed by Has-Lo with a new track and revamped verses.

The new record tilts at a different angle, but the beats still bludgeon without sacrificing soul. The raps are rugged yet introspective. The North Carolina native’s voice is grizzled and shot through with the fatigue that comes from late nights, cigarettes and coffee. Has-Lo’s beats coax a deeper melancholy out of Castle’s hymns.

This isn’t struggle rap, but rather an acknowledgement of human struggles. Old soul loops wind around lamp-less alleys, the sound of footsteps pounding, sirens blaring, and guns clutched tightly amidst scathing winter winds. Just when the darkness seems almost too ominous, Castle cracks a smirk. The nocturnal street disciple is the same dude reading The Onion, writing ballads to Homer Simpson’s nemesis Frank Grimes, and mocking rappers whose lyrics are so kitsch they’re like a graveyard of pink flamingos and garden gnomes.

Don’t dismiss this as nostalgia for the 90s. The chops, scenarios, and smoke are all highly modern, but the mood brings to mind classics of the past from Ghostface Killah, Organized Konfusion and Mos Def. It’s aggressive and sentimental without being saccharine. Deeply soulful music equal parts smart and sad. Hip Hop DX already called the original Gasface one of 2013’s best and most slept-on records, full of “strong wordplay, comedic wit, and brash demeanor matching the [original] 3rd Bass classic.” No need to make the same mistake twice. This is the only Gasface you’ll ever want to receive.
