After More Heart Than Brains was released in 2009, Greetings From Tuskan (Joëlle Lê) and Buck 65 (Rich Terfry) directly started working on a follow up record. This turned out to be a high mountain to climb and it wasn’t until September 2013 that everything starting to come together. A half-decade removed from the ethereal hopeless romanticism of 2009 Bike For Three! have returned with their sophomore LP on Fake Four, Inc.

The album begins with the sound of a solitary heart beating underscored by Joëlle’s eerie, soothing atmospherics. From there the urgency of “Full Moon” kicks in and Rich is at the podium, unraveling his innermost thoughts through tightly knit stanzas and abstracted fragments.

Joëlle’s aural shapes and colours have found a focus that push Rich’s words and performance to new places. Both artists feeding off each others darkest states and lingering demons. Joëlle imagined a mesmerizing foundation for Rich’s poetry and associate thoughts. The result is the music of a shared lucid dream and a conversation held in several different languages.

The listener is left to connect the dots on cryptic tracks like “You Can Be Everything” and “The Muse Inside Me”, as Buck’s frantic internal dialogue refracts off of Joëlle’s arpeggiating synths, rich, multi-hued textures and subtle backing vocals.

So Much Forever retains its thematic continuity through Rich’s candid writing and Joëlle’s kaleidoscopic collages whilst allowing the protagonist to explore a wide range of deliveries. On “Conflation”, Buck is a beat poet lost in time, placing his anguish in a larger context and wrapping up the record with the thesis statement “My love will level this city.”

So Much Forever can be seen as the logical next step in their story, another page in their shared diary that sees Joëlle taking up more vocal duties and Rich exploring new corners of his imagination.

Since leaving the Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Frusciante has ventured away from rock, instead trying his hand at “modern classical music,” “progressive synth pop,” and experimental world fusion. Now, he’s announced his latest unexpected project: producing an album for Los Angeles hip-hop duo Black Knights. Medieval Chamber is due out on January 14 through Record Collection.

Black Knights members Rugged Monk and Crisis reportedly met Frusciante by chance through mutual acquaintance RZA. This led to a creative collaboration between Frusciante and Rugged Monk, and once Crisis came on board, the project turned into a full-length Black Knights LP.

This is Frusciante’s first foray into rap production, although there has been a distinct hip-hop undercurrent to some of the sampled beats in his recent solo work.

“The great freedom I’ve found in doing hip-hop is that as long as the beat is hard and something that rappers will respond to creatively, the music can be literally any style of music you want,” he said in a statement. “On any given song I can end up chopping up classic music or rock music or melodies based in free jazz ideas. I’ve felt more free doing this album than I have doing anything else.”

Rugged Monk offered, “This is his first go-round as far as doing hip-hop, but John Frusciante is a very musical guy. If you sit down and talk to him, he can take you from Donna Summer to Led Zeppelin to Jane’s Addiction back to Ice Cube. His range in music is vast. So, when he channelled into what we wanted to do as far as our sound, we were able to bring things out of each other.”

And Crisis added, “As a producer, you hear the elevation every time he comes with a new beat. It sounds like you’re recording with a whole band, but it’s just one dude doing it.”

This is known: Young Fathers are three young men from Edinburgh and Liberia and Nigeria, all at the same time. Their journey has taken them through various incarnations and styles but they are still only in their mid 20s. And… and this is important: they’ve chosen to kill the past—their own past, even—to make their own future.

The what-what, the feeling: Following on from the acclaimed EPs TAPE ONE and TAPE TWO, their debut album DEAD comes as an intimate epic, thirty six minutes of…. what? What? You can call it hip hop or rap, but Alloysious, G and Kayus sing more than they chat. There’s the suburbs and the cities of Grey Britain in there, but also Africa. There’s an obsession with the surface texture of sound, the psychedelicist’s love of noise.

Equally, the deep, warm, maternal reassurance of bass. But the band also craft hook after hook, instant kid-melodies, piling them up on great reefs of backing vocals. Above all, what they insist on is that their music has to mean something, emotionally. If this is a wake, it’s a celebratory one, full of heart.

The PR facts: Over the last year, Young Fathers have carved up stages all over Europe and the US. In addition to directing their own videos they have made a series of short films for Channel 4. They’ve hosted a late night slot on BBC 1Xtra and curated one-off nights in Scotland and London.

Their album is released by renowned West Coast indie Anticon in their first ever collaboration with the UK’s own Big Dada. The first single from DEAD, “LOW,” has already been played on daytime Radio 1 by Fearne Cotton, where it belongs (of course).
