Lee Fields released his very fi rst full-length LP in 1979 entitled, “Let’s Talk It Over”. It featured his most successful song of the era, “She’s A Lovemaker”, which was at one time licensed and promoted by London Records. Mint copies of “Let’s Talk It Over”, which was self released by Mr. Fields and mostly sold at shows and out the back of his car, can fetch four digit numbers on eBay. Even the bootleg version from the early nineties sells for up to four hundred dollars. Truth & Soul is proud to present the deluxe re-issue of Lee Fields’ holy grail album, “Let’s Talk It Over”. The CD and double LP also features songs from his singles catalogue including “Funky Screw”, “We Fought For Survival”, “Bewildered”, “Meet Me Tonight”, “The Bull Is Coming”, “Everybody’s Gonna Give Their Thing Away”, and many more.

Jnatural’s 3rd studio release ‘Bad Woman Rising’ (self-released and distributed by Fake Four distro) stands as an evolution from her earlier work as she focuses on creating a more upbeat, powerful sound and collaborates with other influential artists with this release. With much of her earlier work focused on themes of self discovery and love, Jnatural’s previous music has been described by critics as somber and moody. However a few life experiences, coupled with an intense touring and work schedule, including the creation and release of her own clothing line in 2013, have given her different perspectives to express allowing her to further explore her “discovered” self. Tracks like “Killer Cliché” and “Manna” are an extension of this idea by exploring the use of the discovered self to break societal boundaries for all.
Having always been at odds with the male dominated hip-hop sphere, being an attractive female who can really spit it; she takes shots at the double standard for women and female based stereotypes in the tracks, ‘cinderella’ and ’round and round’. Overall ‘Bad Woman Rising’ (title track) is a display of feminine power, sexuality and intelligence. With multifaceted production from a wide berth of producers such as ldonthecut, Blu and Eligh and guest spots from the likes of Ras Kass, Toki Wright and Yellowman (yes, that Yellowman!) ‘Bad Woman Rising’ scheduled for a June 11 release, looks to be one of 2013’s top records.

This album was produced entirely during 2 weeks of June back in 2010. The inspiration for it came in a dark period and it’s atsmosphere reflects it. It is a mixture of sample-based hip-hop, downtempo, trip-hop, poetry, heavy use of cognac and beer, and last but not least a bunch of obsessions… An obsession with Vincent Price, with heavy nineties hip hop drums and of course, an obsession with Bukowski’s writings. The group was founded in the early 90s by three childhood friends: Baatin, T3, rapper and producer J Dilla, who all grew up together in the Conant Gardens neighborhood of Detroit, MI. After leaving Pershing High School, the trio began to forge a path into the Detroit underground hip hop scene and quickly found themselves steadily gaining popularity, where they originally went by the name Ssenepod.
Even though the group has suffered many heartaches and member changes over the years, Slum Village always finds a way to reinvent its brand. As the group has persevered despite the struggles over the years, it was only natural that the inspiration for this album title paid tribute to Slum Village”s enduring quality. The meaning of Evolution can be described as “a continuous change to a higher, more complex or better state” and that is exactly what Slum Village has ascribed to with their music over the years, culminating with this new album. The Evolution of Slum Village continues with a reinvigorated energy, as founding member T3 holds down the legacy along with the Grammy-nominated producer Young RJ as well as young prodigy Illa J at his side.
