As a team member of G.O.O.D. Music, he’s been given a powerful platform to not only perform with talented contemporaries, but maintain his own identity as an artist with strong southern roots.

Ivy League does just that; it offers the Atlantean, rhythmic flow of Royal Flush I and II with a few club hits sprinkled throughout. “100 Bottles,” the first single released off of the Ivy League project, features Chris Brown on the hook and the “Finally Famous” man himself, Big Sean. CyHi’s verse, although a lavished depiction of the lifestyle he’s familiar with, offers few punch lines nor ornamented flow for listeners to enjoy; the song betters with Chris Brown, who speeds the track up with an arsenal of aggressive lines. The song doesn’t reach it’s true climax until the end, though, when Big Sean exclaims “I’m just champagne pissing, drinking till I might drown/Seen her in her wedding dress, I’ve seen her in her nightgown.”

“Tool,” featuring Pill and Trouble and produced by the Illusive Orchestra is sonically enjoyable, offering a jazzy foundation of saxophones and slapped string basses for the artist’s rhymes. CyHi does well to outshine his feature’s verses of Pill & Trouble by increasing the tempo of his flow to an exciting pace. “A-Town,” could very well be the first tune-catching track on Ivy League. All the hype bolstered by the marching band beat turns out to be a letdown for listeners; B.o.B is the only fortified verse, closing out the track with true trill by representing his Atlantean roots: “Maybe Outkast made me feel like this/Put your A’s up if you feel like this, we got the Georgia Dome jumpin’ like we still got Vick.”

CyHi The Prynce is at his best when he flows over the aforementioned funk of the Illusive Orchestra on tracks like “Tool” and “Lives;” the club bumpers, although catchy and quick to acquire blogger attention, don’t fit the artist that has gained a deserved and respectable fan base through funky, original projects like Royal Flush I, Royal Flush II and Jack of All Trades. Ivy League represents CyHi’s southern roots and positively differentiates himself from G.O.O.D. Music, but does not represent the potential flow, rhymes and creativity he’s displayed in the past.

It’s truly apt that Raw Money Raps opens with Jeremiah Jae hazily reminiscing about awakening from an especially chimerical journey. After a kaleidoscopic grip of beat tapes, EPs and mixtapes that have sent wi-fi connections rumbling, as well as a move from windswept Chi-city to the home of his Brainfeeder crew in LA, Jae unveils his sprawling debut full-length release. More than just an album, this is an all-encompassing Pynchonian, Tumblr-feeding, social networked art-rap fever dream. A seismic collision of the analog and digital worlds makes for deceptively hooky beats that double as sonic rabbit-holes, all of which cradles Jae’s flow – which is a versatile instrument all it’s own, skipping from rapid, focused deliveries to surprising melodic sing-a-longs then chopped-and-screwed slump and stream of consciousness brainfloods.

To be a young producer and MC in 2012 is no easy task, however with style and substance in short order and internet democratization run-rampant, there’s arguably never been a better time for one to make their mark. Rather than jump headlong into the cresting 1990’s throwback revival, Jae develops tracks and lyrics that link technology and metaphysics in a defiantly contemporary way, flipping swag rap tropes on their head and reveals a penchant for affecting introspection. This singular approach to music is almost certainly a by-product of Jae’s split personality as a visual artist. Working in the context of fine art with paintings and collages as well as spreading into fashion design, Jae’s output aligns him with multi-media luminaries like the late, great Rammellzee.

Raw Money Raps’ first single, “Money” is a where-did-my-cash-go-mid- afternoon summer jam for hot cloudy days ahead, accompanied by a suitably tweaked video directed by fellow renaissance man Flying Lotus. “Money” comes paired with another album standout in “Money and Food”, which takes trap rap’s unhinged synths and 808 kicks and filters them through Jae’s prism. Across it’s span, the album touches on fractured, cautionary headbangers (“Rover”), stringladen classicism (“Cat Fight”) and deeply psychedelic futurism (“Hercules Versus the Commune”) and in the process, ignites the brightest rising star of 2012. From the ashes of the Rabble Rousers, one of the most legendary hip-hop groups in West Virginia rose the Dinosaur Burps. Consisting of B. Rude and Vivid Hues on the mic, and DJ Sour Sqweazle on the 1 (not 1’s and 2’s, the 1), the Burps are one of the hardest touring and hardest partying groups in the state, and perhaps the stratosphere. They were both members of the thrash punk band ‘Mario Van Peeballs’ and the George Thorogood and the Destroyers cover band ‘Jorge Thorohood and the Breakers of Stuff.’ As the legend goes, they have been asked to leave, but then let back in the next day at the same bar a total of 836 consecutive days in a row, and invented the words “shit” and “fuck.” They once skunked Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine 11-0 in a table tennis championship game, but since skunking is not an official rule they actually went on to beat them 21-0. Inspired by the Canadian duo the Queef Sisters, they are occasionally joined by Mic Rude and L-NO to form the Dinosaur Queefs, and in this incarnation once broke a good friend out of prison using nothing but a laser pointer and a rogue circus elephant. It is also common knowledge amongst the hill people that 80-90% of things attributed to Chuck Norris or that guy from the Dos Equis commercials were in fact done by the Dinosaur Burps. Everyone’s biting their shit.

This was recorded, mixed and mastered at my studio. FLAC is straight from the PreSonus Studio One DAW it was produced in.
