Amiri is back on the scene with an all new album entitled Vinyl Ritchie. Named after the fan favorite song “Vinyl Ritchie (2006)” off his last album, The Recipe, Amiri’s sophomore effort brings back the soulful boom-bap production that real Hip- Hop heads crave. Featuring the street single “I Do It” and lead single “A Dreamer”, the new album also reunites Amiri with partner in rhyme Spectac for “Take Our Time”.

Not that it’s missing, but Amiri wants appreciation when it comes to skills in the art of Hip Hop. Born and raised in South Carolina, Amiri was introduced to Hip Hop during his childhood through the sounds of Hip Hop pioneers like T La Rock, Kurtis Blow, and Run DMC. “Growing up, anything with rap music involved, I wanted to be a part of it”. Crafting his skills as an MC was how it began, but Amiri realized behind the boards was his true gift.
Amiri is definitely not new to the game. In 1996 Amiri produced the remix to Mista’s top ten single “Blackberry Molasses”. Since then, Amiri has sharpened his skills and worked with many underground emcees such as Spectac, Blame One, Rubix from Mass Influence, Makeba Mooncycle and last but not least, A Tribe Called Quest on their reunion single “I C U (Doin It)” featuring Erykah Badu.

In 1999, an all-star cast of politically active rappers—including Zack De La Rocha, Chuck D, Pharoahe Monch, and many others—created the one-time offshoot, Unbound Allstars, and made “Mumia 911.” Mumia Abu-Jamal was a Panther who was sentenced to death after being convicted of killing a police officer in 1981. Mumia’s imprisonment became the source of intense debate due to questions about whether or not he deserved the death penalty, if he was given a fair trial, and if he committed the crime at all. The song was created to raise awareness about Mumia’s incarceration, making it kinda like the Black Panther version of “We Are The World.” Mumia is currently still in jail, but in 2008 a Court of Appeals reconsidered his capital sentencing.

With the release of Greenball 3.5 on Fieldwerk Recordings
Jel has further established himself as one of the most solid
producers of our time. Each song crafted on a SP1200 and
meticulously laced with live MPC drums, leading to an
unmistakably distinct feel features an industrially grimy
sound yet the craftsmanship hints at a profoundly nimble
dexterity on the pads.
Much like the other Greenball albums 3.5 slices through the
muck and mire like a brooding symphony, but what separates
this project from the others is the intensity in which the
message is delivered. Songs like Montro, Shock Lock and
Ignition Key snap hard with crunchy boom-baps, and one
would be hard-pressed to call them anything less than
classic Jel. Eclip, Bloop Bit and 94’s provide a nice
melodic counterbalance to the hard edge, but even those
smack with a certain sort of understated venom. Greenball
3.5 sits 13 tracks deep with each song moving hard and fast
which makes putting it on repeat a must

On the Mini-Mini-Me 7″, Deru collaborates with rappers for the first time, turning in sides featuring two Bay Area giants whose work has inspired the downtempo instrumentalist: Casual (Hieroglyphics) and Gift of Gab (Blackalicious). Casual turns “Spliff” into a celebration of his preferred method of getting high while on “Bad Bad Man” Gift of Gab drops his characteristic deep-voiced tongue-twisters over a vicious beat. Without vocals, these tracks wouldn’t be out of place on Deru’s albums. With verses by these two legends, however, Mini-Mini-Me stands apart from the rest of the producer’s catalog.

Much like the Wonder Twins or Voltron, good things only get better when you bring them together. Over the past few months, we’ve been slowly but steadily dropping tracks and videos from the highly anticipated album Toothy Wavy, and its finally here.Toothy Wavy is a collaborative project between Machina Muerte head Isaiah Toothtaker, incarcerated rapper Max B, and production duo The Hood Internet. Toothy Wavy brings together all three artists’ unique styles, ending up with something you’re never quite heard before. Toothtaker, in addition to rapping on the tracks and providing hooks, also helmed most of the videos (of which there was one for each track), while The Hood Internet handled all of the beats, and Max B recorded his verses through the prison phone line. The whole project is a lesson in collaboration through difficult borders, and the result is nothing short of awesome. That’s the extra special cover art above, designed by Doze.
