Recorded over four months in Oakland, Lateef The Truthspeaker s solo debut FireWire brings together some of the best producers of underground hip-hop on one album. Bay Area main stays Chief Xcel, DJ Shadow, Dan the Automator, Somehow at Sea and Headnodic contribute their studio wizardry to the tracks. Guest appearances by Lyrics Born, Del the Funky Homosapien, and The Grouch turn up as well, giving the album a family feel.
As the co-founder of the hip-hop collective SoleSides (now known as Quannum Projects), Lateef the Truthspeaker has been an integral component of the Bay Area’s hip-hop scene since the mid-1990s. The socially-conscious lyricist, who found success rapping alongside Lyrics Born as Latryx, is now bringing together some of the biggest names from his Rolodex to produce his long-overdue solo LP, Firewire.

You may remember Amanda Blank from Bangers and Cash’s “Loose” video, where she sat on a toilet slinging expletives at naked girls. This Philly rapper’s got a mouth your mother could love — if your mom was Lil’ Kim. “Tryin’-a get up in my pussy and smash … I’m Beyoncé, independent woman, handle that!” she brags on “Let Me Get Some,” a booming highlight on her debut. Other tracks run tamer: blank machine-gun one-liners about makeup and true love over New Wave club beats by Diplo and Switch. But on an album where she’s surrounded by dudes (including her pal Spank Rock), she makes being ladylike sound hardcore. “I can’t be the man you need me to,” she admits. Thank God for that.
