Earthburn Records is proud to announce the October 2011 release of ‘Kill Screen’, the second solo project from Salt Lake City recording artist, Mark Dago. The instantly accessible ‘Kill Screen’ blends the totally now sound of producer Fisch (Of Tooth & Nails’ Furthermore and local sure shots: Dani Lion & The Lazy Waves) with Mark’s focused delivery and fierce energetic lyrics. The result is a celebration of video game culture that crackles with pure synthetic tonal nostalgia.
‘Kill Screen’ seems like a forgotten artifact from years gone by. Clocking in at less than twenty minutes, this extended play is a rap dash of blippy and bloppy tunes, tinted with the sounds of rudimentary electronics, that echo many an Nintendo Entertainment System classic. Fisch’s handling of the eight bit enhanced chiptune-esque samples set the tone perfectly with the calculated catchy melodies of vintage 80’s and early 90’s video games. Never sounding as if they are engaged in battle with the other elements of the tune. Not relying on simple white noise and lo-fi bytes, Fisch assimilates the entire experience into a sonic spectacle without sacrificing innovation. On the track, ‘Dynamite Punch’ he effectively fuses Little Mac’s ‘Jogging Theme’ (of ‘Mike Tyson’s Punch Out’ circa 1987) with a brawling snappy break beat. The enigmatic Sinistar’s (Of the William’s game from 82’) digitized taunts are front and center on the EP’s second track, ‘Robostar’. And even Lauren Hoyt (Of Dani Lion) returns to lace ethereal harmonies to the chorus of ‘Magic Kingdom’. Making every word and note being something that you hang onto.
The lyrics are by no means static. Mark lays down introspective thoughts and super powered boom bap throughout the seven songs (minus the intro/outro). The micro hooks and percussive vocals reel us in, and as structures progress we find ourselves becoming more and more involved with it. His sound is simply more substantial, in every way, than in the past. Adding something unique, never aurally limited.
The ‘video game’ theme aside, its just good music that appeals to an entire generation who grew up mastering Nintendo and Atari alike. ‘Kill Screen’ sidesteps the ‘Nerdcore’ classification altogether while entering into a category all of its own. Modern day hip hop in disguise. In a pixelated world with an uncertain future, you will want to keep listening when ‘Kill Screen’ comes to an end.

The record is a selection of beats, which blend craftily soul, jazz and funk samples with hard drums and at times obscure sounds, all in the nostalgic spirit of boom bap music.

Representing the Twin Cities, Out of Bounds formed in the mid 90′.The MC: Chris Caesar spits more tongue twisting lyrics in one minute than the human mind can digest.Hip-hop has always been a big part of Caesar’s life. While playing the drums in high school, the rhythms in his brain converted into lyrics and cadence. At the same time, the electronic music scene exploded and became a strong influence in the music Caesar began to create. The fusion of the two styles took shape over the following years. Now this mad-electro-hiphop-scientist has graduated to the ranks of producer/engineer. Caesar produced beats on the group’s debut release and is currently making an arsenal of tracks for the new album.The DJ: Got beats? KG got plenty. This guy is responsable for some of the most complex programing on the group’s CD. Keith Goya’s first musical influences included early Michael Jackson and Prince. After discovering Portishead, DJ Shadow, and Crystal Method, his interests shifted to hip-hop and electronic music. The first full-length album from Twin Cities Minnesota emcee Lipset. Executive produced by Logan “Lokes” U’u for Sol.Play.Productions and co-executive produced by Lipset himself. While making the album Lokes and Lipset focused on the natural balance of life, paying special attention to the obvious role that trying to maintain a steady balance plays in both of their day-to-days. The first single, “Distortion,” is a playful tell-all of the struggles that come from falling victim to vice while trying to remain righteous and walk a respectable path. Following the same theme, the album starts with a song titled “Outro (Credits Roll),” a song whose beat was made to be the first song on the album but whose lyrics were written like it was the last. Conversely, the last song on the album, titled “Intro (Title Track)” was written to a third party, unusable beat. When Lokes heard the lyrics and brought up his idea of what beat of his would be perfect for the lyrics, it was a beat he had designed to be the last track on the album. It was by fate that the album ended up running backward so well, that’s the balance of the Level Heads LP.

Duenday (pronounced Dwen-day) is a pair of rapper/producers from South Minneapolis. Their music is as unique as their name, which comes from a Spanish word meaning “to have soul,” but also debatably translates to “garden gnome.” Years of collaboration have created a rare chemistry between Initial MC and In2wishin, with lyrics that seem to weave around each other and organic beats that they make themselves. Their music has a sense that they are always ready to party, but also inserts political commentary and self-reflection, carving a niche that is relatable for a wide range of people. Duenday released their first full-length album in November 2010 to local critical acclaim, and has become well known in the Twin Cities for their live, energetic shows. They also hit the road in 2010 with local hip-hop veterans More Than Lights, Kanser, and DJ Gabe Garcia on a five-state Midwest tour, and made appearances at summer music festivals such as Bella Vida and Prairie Grass. With the help of their label No Static Records, Duenday continues to build momentum and influence in the hip-hop scene.

When Myka 9 began his career as a musician, rap was in a radically different place. Say whatever about the “current landscape” in hip-hop, his name isn’t the only thing that’s changed over the years. What has remained constant though, is his focus on straight-up no bullshit hip-hop, on full display with Mykology, the LA rapper’s fifth solo outing.
On first listen, the most striking moment on the album comes early with “Mind Right”, where Myka’s tone sounds relaxed over the thumping instrumental, but in actuality he’s in full mic-attack-double-time-flow-mode. For every instance that Myka flexes his emcee skills, he’s showing versatility as a vocalist somewhere else with cuts like “Hey” and “Tell Me”.
Album highlight “I Must Cross” finds Myka juggling the roles of rapper and vocalist effortlessly to create a head nodding perspective on American immigration. If that wasn’t enough, Myka, along with Organized Elements, handled the production as well. The west-cost jazz infused funk serves as the backbone for the rest of the album to build itself.
Mykology clocks in with 11 tracks at a bit over 40 minutes. What it may lack in length it makes up for in focus and cohesion. No frills, no superfluous interludes, just no gimmick hip-hop. It’s been over two decades since Myka 9 made his first marks with Freestyle Fellowship, and the experience shows. Mykology sounds confident, inspired, and still every bit as fresh Myka 9 has been throughout his career.
