Hold It Down is the third album by Brooklyn-based Rap duo Das EFX (& my personal favourite), released on September 26, 1995 via East West Records. It contains production from acclaimed producers such as DJ Premier, Pete Rock and Easy Mo Bee. The track “Represent The Real Hip Hop” featuring KRS-One is the same version which appears on KRS-One’s 1995 album KRS-One.

Here to Save You All is the debut album by emcee Chino XL released on April 9, 1996. It is predominantly produced by B Wiz and only held two guest appearances from Ras Kass and Kool Keith. It was produced mostly by Chino’s close associates, and the lyrical content revolved around dark, hardcore themes (mostly metaphorical braggadoccio), dismissing the commercialized hip hop that was starting to gain momentum at this time. It contains the infamous but well-known song “Riiiot!” which had a line that possibly alluded to West Coast rapper 2Pac getting raped in prison. 2Pac later called him out on “Hit Em Up,” and Chino responded with a freestyle dis. Chino himself stated that the line was not meant as a dis, and he and 2Pac were on good terms at the time of his passing.

With his untimely death in 1999, Big L’s departure left a void in the hip hop scene that can never be filled. Known for his witty, literary, lyrical style and for being near, but never quite at the center of commercial success, Big L appeared to be on the verge of a breakthrough in 1999. Mase and Cam’Ron, two of his partners in the early ’90s group Children of the Corn, went on to MTV stardom, but Big L’s 1995 Columbia debut, Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous, only earned limited critical atten­tion. At the time of his death, though, Big L’s independently released single, “Ebonics,” was receiving consistent airplay on the indie-centric radio mix shows hosted by WKCR’s Bobbito Garcia and WNYU’s DJ Eclipse. In July of 2000, his posthumous sophomore full length The Big Picture was released to critical raves and phenomenal sales. Both releases have gone on to scan over 731K units in the US alone! With last years “Return of the Devil’s Son” that featured unre­leased material, the thrist for more Big L material has had a second awakening. With “The Danger Zone”, Big L’s estate is looking to give the die hards what they have been looking for. After 10 plus years of his fans listening to shoddy bootleg dubs, the estate has digitally remastered some of Big L’s finest tracks and freestyles (along with previously unreleased material) so fans can properly complete their Big L collection.

“I went in with my team Broady Champs: N.Y.C.E who is now Huey P Capone, Abnormal who is now Buddy Leezle, Point God and Scholar Golden. Everyone hailed from the East Coast but we all linked up in Atlanta in the late 90’s. These are the cats I would roll with outside of music, getting into trouble, lolz…..All talented and everyone in the crew had a different style. Also if we were all in the same spot expect chaos and intimidation. Ask some of your favorite artists……..there was some tension when Broady was around. So we just did local shows and recorded at my crib. All heartfelt hiphop. No label, no bullshit just me and my brothers getting busy. Them dudes are my heart to this day and Broady was like my college experience. We got so many chapters of music. Easily like 10 yrs worth. MF Grimm ended up hearing 1 of our tapes in 2004 and signed us to Day By Day and we dropped an album. Other than that, we did our own tapes and sold em on the street and at shows.
