O MC e produtor Hurakán acaba de lançar na internet o disco “Nem Mártir
Nem Messias”, uma compilação feita em 2005, com composições feitas entre
2001 e 2005. Após 5 anos guardado na gaveta, finalmente Hurakán resolveu
disponibilizar seu primeiro trabalho solo oficial, e de graça.

“Nem Mártir Nem Messias” é um disco clássico de rap, com scratches,
colagens, batidas pesadas e loops muito bem selecionados ilustrando as
letras de temas variados, que vão desde natureza, como em “Fins de Tarde”
passando por política, como em “Corrupção” e indo até questionamentos
pessoais como em “Mais Um Dia”.

Com a participação de Nave, Dj Caique, Drunk Sinatra e principalmente
Hurakán nas produções, conta também com Rapzodo e Andiara Muniz nos
vocais e ainda Dj Jeff Bass e Dj Marc-T nos riscos. A textura sonora do disco,
lembra algo que foi extraído de uma fita K7, remetendo aos raps “Lo-fi”
típicos dos anos 90, a chamada Golden Era do rap. Destaque pras faixas:
“Como Um 8”, “Mais um Dia (Perdidamente pt. 2)” e “Deixa Pra Mim”.

Critical Beatdown is the debut full-length LP by the hip hop group known as the Ultramagnetic MCs. Released in 1988, it was the first full-length example of the influential style of the MCs: the bizarre, lyrical imagery, the unexpected and unpredictable polysyllabic rhymes and the innovative sampling. It has since been lauded as an underground classic, despite its failure in unit sales. Kool Keith is usually regarded the driving force behind the vocal style of the record, but most songs featured group member Ced-Gee (“Delta Force One”) as well. (Although he appears on the album cover, member TR Love did not vocally contribute on this record. At this point in time, TR had only rhymed on “Feelin’ It”, the B-side of the Watch Me Now 12″ single.) Produced by Ced Gee, the album features audio sampling techniques that had rarely, if ever, been used previously. In particular, Ced’s syncopated drops of chopped, out-of-context samples (building on the E-mu SP-12, the E-mu SP-1200 predecessor), along with his production work on the majority of Boogie Down Productions’ seminal Criminal Minded, have led some to credit Ced Gee, and Critical Beatdown, as among the critical sources of the so-called golden age of sampling. As it samples many other albums, so has Beatdown been sampled many times since in other hip-hop and electronic records. While it wasn’t a sample (Kool Keith re-recorded the lyrics), the song “Give the Drummer Some” is notable for providing the lyrics of the controversial 1997 hit “Smack My Bitch Up” by the Prodigy.

The Great Adventures of Slick Rick is the debut album by hip hop performer Slick Rick, released in 1988 (see 1988 in music), three years after releasing his famous songs with beatboxer Doug E. Fresh, “La Di Da Di” and “The Show.” While Slick Rick’s distinctive delivery and humorous tone earned him many fans, making this album one of the most popular albums from the golden age of East Coast hip hop, his vulgarity and touching on issues of misogyny (such as on “Treat Her Like a Prostitute”) also earned him many detractors. The album is among the few to receive a perfect five-mic score from The Source magazine. In 1998, the album was selected as one of The Source’s 100 Best Rap Albums.

One Leg Up Records has connected with C.L. Smooth to finally unearth some of the legendary sessions that were not included on the seminal “All Souled Out” EP. While these sessions always seemed to be a bit of an urban legend, a few of them had actually leaked on WBLS “In Control” back in the day. Once the debut EP was released, the duo quickly went on to change hip-hop history and these early tracks were all but forgotten! Fast forward to 2009…..Thought lost forever, 4XL has done the unexpected in working with C.L. to unearth these vintage treasures.
