R.I.P Eyedea

One of the Twin Cities most beloved musical talents has passed away. Micheal “Eyedea” Larsen, a longtime Rhymesayer, singer, lyricist and fixture in the indie hip-hop scene died early this morning, just a month shy of his 29th birthday.

Friends of Larsen said his mother, Kathy Averill, found him this morning.

“It is with great pain and sadness that I tell you my son Mikey (Eyedea) has passed away,” she wrote on his personal Facebook page. “At this time we kindly request your respect and our privacy as we process this devastating loss. On behalf of Mikey’s family, close friends and fans, thank you.”

Part of the Rhymesayers crew from its early days and a creative force to be reckoned with behind the mic, Eyedea painted beautiful and often abstract pictures with his lyrics, revealing the raw, serrated edges of emotion. He and his DJ, Abilities (a.k.a. Max Keltgen) were champions of their crafts and best friends since the age of 14.

A memorial fundraiser has been started here

RIP and thanks for the craftmanship and dedication to an art form that gets recycled and sold at value prices day in and day out. Hip Hop and music in general lost an unheralded legend…….

Special Rider Blues

From the upcoming project of czech producer DJ Wich and Rasco (of Cali Agents), a.k.a The Untouchables. Album “Al Capone´s Vault” in stores October 20th 2010.

Armed with an alluring flow that unveils haphazardly like stop motion animation, Portland, Oregon rookie MC Cloudy October demands your full attention from the first bar uttered and beyond. The alternate take of “inlaw”, the opening track of his debut album The Aviator is Dead EP, proves my bold claim as Cloudy  ‘s tongue pirouettes around a patchwork beat dripping with eerie bass, spooky string scales, and various piano loops. Much like “inlaw”, his oddball poetics and infectious delivery on “Lowerface” is also sure to grab underground hip hop fan’s attention, as he bounces up and down through a foggy landscape of dark drums and tribal smoked sounds.

Underground hip hop has changed a lot over the past few years: Instead of angst fueled technical raps over abstract production, we have glittery, emotionally charged rhymes over electro-tickled laptop experiments; instead of apocalyptic poetry, we have love letters turned into rap lyrics; instead of Definitive Jux, some would say we have definitive junk. I’m open eared to the new indie hip hop vibe, but it is kind of refreshing to hear that old subterranean sound rise back to the surface.

Cloudy October embodies it and bodies it, so enjoy the EP and the two tracks below on your cloudy October day.
