Y’all might recognize this track from the Eastbound & Down theme song.

Often dismissed as a sub-par release by nitpicking sticklers from hell, Getting Ready was Kings first release for Leon Russells newly founded Shelter Records label (it would be followed by Texas Cannonball and Woman Across the River). Even though King had become quite influential on a bunch of white blues-rockers, he hadn’t released much interesting material during the years before, but this release caused a renewed interest, so that all three Kings reached something of a popularity peak around the same time. While most of Kings earlier stuff was powerful, yet extremely melodic and accessible material, the material on this album does come off as a response to the changed musical landscape: the overall sound is tough and meaty, both the session musicians and producers (Leon Russell and Don Nix) had a rock background (nearly all of them appeared on Joe Cockers Mad Dogs & Englishmen a year earlier), while several songs (especially on the second half) are consciously crafted blues-rock tunes. While there were a lot of nay-sayers at the time, the album does rock hard and offers a strong bunch of songs.

Second album of dub and hiphop weighted jazz and psychedelic modes from The Mars Volta keyboardist Isaiah “Ikey” Owens and his Free Moral Agents. With ‘Honey In The Carcass Of the Lion’ the scope of the group has evidently expanded greatly since their debut album. They now operate as a six piece band with Mendee Ichikawa on vocals backed with an array of rhodes, drums, guitars and Isaiah Owens jumping between keys. Most notably Tony Allen contributes percussion to the Morricone-esque guitars and Ethio-jazz figures of ‘North Is Red’, while ‘Dragon Pow’ recalls a scuzzier TV On The Radio, and ‘When I Smile’ works out complex jazz drums, New wavey vox and advanced Math-poppy arrangements. ‘Six Degrees’ offers a moment of reflective darkened R’n’B pop.

Track after dope track of new sounds and genres can be found in the immaculate production of ‘No Shortcuts’, the latest Cold Busted 15 track release from Gramatik. A mixture of instrumental Hip Hop, Dubstep and Indie Dance with his gratifying touches of Soul and Funk, the album showcases enticing new synthesizers. A hybrid of Hip Hop and Dubstep at 93 BPM ‘Who Got Juice’ drops in with authoritative full bass lines popping off with a peppered soul sample, mauve synths and drum rolls. Following is ‘Liquified’ an imaginative Dubstep song around 75 BPM, welding a classic violin loop, and wobbling deep bass lines, an infectious snare, 8 bit bleeps and fresh sampling. ‘Blood Ties’ brings in exotic Middle Eastern sounds, a sitar melody, tribally drums and drops in big with fat undulating synths and seamless, fluctuating drum patterns. Spiritual and contagious, ‘I Really Do Believe’ ramps in with soulful organ keys, echoing choppy vocals, hi hats and arpeggios of colorful synths for a gentle explosion of beats and melody. ‘The Night Hawk’ screeches in with edgy electro synths and full, distorted beats layered with funky vocals and horns progressing into a full on dance floor banger. Ending the album is ‘To Get By’ a nostalgic, mid-nineties influenced tune with intelligent synths, talkative basslines and beats that double time into a danceable spread of apt electronic sounds. Epic, provoking, cinematic, inspiring and appealing to many audiences ‘No Shortcuts’ warms us up for Gramatik’s 2010 Fall Tour with Pretty Lights starting this late October!
