If you are an internet music junkie, chances are you know of Philadelphia born rapper, Random (aka Mega Ran). The video game connoisseur/Rapper/Producer/Teacher has been making a lot of noise in the blogosphere ever since the release of his popular 2007 MegaMan inspired album, Mega Ran. His humble attitude and nonchalant approach to his rhyming allows his messages and flow to swirl through your senses like smoke from Mega Man’s arm cannon. Earlier this year, Random received even more acclaim when he connected with Panacea producer K-Murdock on their video game inspired album, Forever Famicom. The nostalgic roller coaster ride through 8 bit yesterdays and the technologies of today got hip hop gamers to press pause on both their controllers and iPods and contribute to an online fund that would allow Random and K-Murdock to turn Forever Famicom into a DVD movie and vinyl version of the album. The overwhelming response from fans– the $2,500.00 goal was reached in 5 days and the pot now bubbles over at $3,000.00 with 20 days left in the campaign– has been so inspiring that Random felt he needed to give something back.

Endemic has earned production features on indie LPs from both sides of the Atlantic, also producing a number of tracks on J Ronin’s All Elements mixtape series in NYC. On terminal Illness he presents tracks and collaborations with US underground hip hop legends and up & coming UK artists. With layers of warm strings, harmonious pianos, horns and pounding bass lines fronted by rhymes and flows that blend seamlessly with Endemic’s immense production. Dialect is Hip Hop Lyricist/DJ/Producer from Adelaide whose mission is to make skills at the forefront of Hip Hop in Australia and worldwide. Dialect began rhyming at the tender age of 12, inspired by his eldest brothers collection of classic 80’s/90’s era Hip Hop. Entering his first freestyle battle at the age of 13 Dialect took it out and went on to win countless more battles making him a force to reckoned with on the mic at an early age. Well renown for his remarkable freestyle ability and live show performance Dialect became a stalwart in the live hip hop circuit in Adelaide. He then released his debut EP The Sound of Change in 2006 featuring hip hop heavyweight Delta on the now classic Freestyle Jam, Freestyle Exodus. The EP received positive reviews and topped the South Australian Music Charts for consecutive weeks. After the success of his first EP Dialect continued touring Australia and has played support for some of the Biggest International acts hip hop has to offer; including Ghostface Killah, The Beatnuts, Lord Finesse, DJ Premier Grandmaster Flash, Jeru Tha Damaja, RZA, MOP, Pharoahe Monch, Masa Ace, Kool Keith & Lupe Fiasco at 2009’s Big Day Out.

Koolism are Australian hip hop’s oft-overlooked champions. Having been in the game for more than 17 years, they’ve taken a slightly different route to success than their contemporaries like the Hilltop Hoods and Bliss ‘N’ Eso. Canberra boys MC Hau ( Langomi-e-Hau Latukefu ) and DJ/producer Danielsan ( Daniel Elleson ) formed Koolism in 1992, based on a mutual appreciation of each other’s work.
Constant touring gained them notoriety amongst the underground scene, and the release of their 1996 EP Bedroom Shit on tape cemented their position as the up-and-coming talents of Aussie hip hop. Two more albums, a number of EPs (including two that were stolen and never released), and the inaugural ARIA Award in 2004 for Best Urban Release followed. Now the dynamic duo is back with their fifth studio album, The ‘Umu.
Before starting out, I figured it was best to do some research into what exactly an ‘umu is. Turns out it’s a form of underground oven used in Polynesian cooking, and a nod to Hau’s Tongan heritage. After listening to the album as a whole, its meaning became more apparent. Koolism’s music can be compared to an ‘umu. It’s like an underground hot-bed of musical styles; from hip hop to RnB, with a bit of dancehall and reggae thrown in for good measure.
Hau and Danielsan have outdone themselves again, evolving their sound to incorporate a forward-thinking aesthetic, which is probably gained from years of experience. Boasting very accessible tunes, but with a staunch underground sensibility, Koolism are indeed the underground heroes of Australian hip hop – and deservedly so.
