“One of this countries most talented MCs” – Onion Magazine “Leading a new generation of Australian MCs” – Delta The Lostralian “Rugged Uncut is equal parts impressive and indeed scary what lyrical skills Dialect brings to the Microphone” – Shane Scott
Dialect is Hip Hop Lyricist/DJ/Producer from Adelaide whose mission is to make skills at the forefront of Hip Hop in Australia and worldwide. Dialect began rhyming at the tender age of 12, inspired by his eldest brothers collection of classic 80’s/90’s era Hip Hop. Entering his first freestyle battle at the age of 13 Dialect took it out and went on to win countless more battles making him a force to reckoned with on the mic at an early age. Well renown for his remarkable freestyle ability and live show performance Dialect became a stalwart in the live hip hop circuit in Adelaide. He then released his debut EP The Sound of Change in 2006 featuring hip hop heavyweight Delta on the now classic Freestyle Jam, Freestyle Exodus. The EP received positive reviews and topped the South Australian Music Charts for consecutive weeks. After the success of his first EP Dialect continued touring Australia and has played support for some of the Biggest International acts hip hop has to offer; including Ghostface Killah, The Beatnuts, Lord Finesse, DJ Premier Grandmaster Flash, Jeru Tha Damaja, RZA, MOP, Pharoahe Monch, Masa Ace, Kool Keith & Lupe Fiasco at 2009’s Big Day Out.
In 2008, Dialect released his long awaited debut LP Rugged Uncut to wide critical Acclaim. The album featured cuts and production from Australia’s finest and appearances from Prince Po of legendary 90’s New York outfit Organized Konfusion & Louisville Sluggah (NY) of the Boot Camp Click.

The Deadbrain Diaries charts the final, terminal years of a tumoured city. The last, brief flares of light spark from amber glass to sharp steel and rough paper. Tornts has unleashed a furious tirade, raging against the indifference of the bone grinding machine and the piss stained nightmares on every street corner. This is the staggering power of the Tornts juggernaut at full throttle. As one of the leaders of underground rap in Australia, this is the first Tornts LP featuring work by other producers as well as the man himself. Beats have been crafted by Beat Butcher (Brad Strut, Sean Price, Ghetts), Ciph Barker (Killah Priest, Hell Razah), Chemo (Skandal, Triple Darkness) and Ciecmate (BTE, Hospice). This all star cast is joined by Tank Beats (Germany), INCH Productions (France) DJ Lopsided (750 Rebels), Heata (Hired Goons) and up and coming Melbourne producer Illuminate.
Tornts has been ready since he left the womb, and with fellow spitters such as Bigfoot, Diem, Billy Bunks, Ken Oath, Jake Biz and Kid Selzy, his rhymes are merciless. Tornts is back to devastate, with 18 tracks ranging from cold street visions in ‘No One’ to the relentless ‘Hit Never Miss’ and the apocalyptic soundtrack synth reality of ‘Wastelands Author.’ Anthems ‘You’re All Goin Out’ and ‘Bad News’ are placed in contrast with the brief, bleak ‘Wish I Was Dead’ and the double time inspired ‘Reaper’s My Chauffeur.’ This album also sees the return of the devastating combination of Tornts and Brad Strut, tearing their lyrical sandstorm through the carefully manicured gardens of soft radio pop rap. Strut and Tornts are set to appear at the Hip Hop Kemp Festival in the Czech Republic, sharing the bill with acts such as Masta Ace, Large Professor, Necro, and Buckshot, Heltah Skeltah, plus Smif N Wessun of the legendary Boot Camp Clik.

Koolism are Australian hip hop’s oft-overlooked champions. Having been in the game for more than 17 years, they’ve taken a slightly different route to success than their contemporaries like the Hilltop Hoods and Bliss ‘N’ Eso. Canberra boys MC Hau ( Langomi-e-Hau Latukefu ) and DJ/producer Danielsan ( Daniel Elleson ) formed Koolism in 1992, based on a mutual appreciation of each other’s work.
Constant touring gained them notoriety amongst the underground scene, and the release of their 1996 EP Bedroom Shit on tape cemented their position as the up-and-coming talents of Aussie hip hop. Two more albums, a number of EPs (including two that were stolen and never released), and the inaugural ARIA Award in 2004 for Best Urban Release followed. Now the dynamic duo is back with their fifth studio album, The ‘Umu.
Before starting out, I figured it was best to do some research into what exactly an ‘umu is. Turns out it’s a form of underground oven used in Polynesian cooking, and a nod to Hau’s Tongan heritage. After listening to the album as a whole, its meaning became more apparent. Koolism’s music can be compared to an ‘umu. It’s like an underground hot-bed of musical styles; from hip hop to RnB, with a bit of dancehall and reggae thrown in for good measure.
Hau and Danielsan have outdone themselves again, evolving their sound to incorporate a forward-thinking aesthetic, which is probably gained from years of experience. Boasting very accessible tunes, but with a staunch underground sensibility, Koolism are indeed the underground heroes of Australian hip hop – and deservedly so. But enough with this review, please grab a plate – it’s time for us to feast from The ‘Umu.

TRES RECORDS“My Intellect,” the first single off of E.S..Q. and Chikaramanga’s album “The Succession,” shows the well-blended chemistry of the two artists and lets the masses know that they are ready to make some noise. The single contains heavy string loops and drums provided by Chikaramanga, laced with the quick/ buttery flow of E.S.Q., giving the track and overall feeling of the 90’s hip hop we all grew up to and love. The b-side contains two more tracks, which really balances the entire 12″ out. “Coast to Coast,” smoothens the intensity of the record, allowing listeners to vibe out to the calm beat and lyrics to match. The final track off the 12″ is “All City,” which brings the energy back up with a funky groove that’ll make anyone’s head bob up, down, left and right. The “My Intellect” 12″ is definitely a bold statement made by the two, and they are more than ready to back it up when the people start wanting more.
E.S.Q., originally from the East Coast, now residing in the West, is an MC that is always on the move, both in the aspect of his music to his lifestyle. One week he may be living in Chicago, IL, and the next you might find him in Berkeley, CA. But no matter where he’s at, you’ll be guaranteed to find him selling his latest album and making moves to release his next. During his stay in Los Angeles, E.S.Q. gained support from artists such as the Legendary Percee P, Planet Asia, and Large Professor. His presence on the microphone was soon to be discovered by Chikaramanga through TRES label mate, Paten Locke, and the two have been recording ever since then.
Chikaramanga, of Giant Panda, has been pushing his music to the next step. After having album releases and worldwide tours with Giant Panda, he has currently been releasing 45’s which contain emcees such as Big Tone, Droop Capone, and Co$$ rapping over his beats. Since 1996, Chikara has been chopping samples and tracking out drums. Even in today’s heavily computerized scene, he sticks with his SP-12, MPC60, and S3000. With all the beats that he is able to produce while running the day-to-day operations for an independent label, one can only wonder how his typical day goes.

Expertism Music Group is proud to announce the release of RUGGED INTELLECT’s debut LP, entitled “Renaissance Music: The Introduction.” The hottest newcomer in the industry, RUGGED INTELLECT’s lyricism is compared to Rakim and Big Punisher, an easy and accurate comparison.
Hailing from Montreal, Canada, Rugged’s multi-lingualism combined with his multisyllabic, relentless rhyme schemes position him as a unique voice in the hip-hop industry. Production is handled by Domingo, Buckwild (DITC), Memo (Molemen), Montreal’s Apokalyptik and Executive Producer Adam Sampler. The album was given 3.5 MICS in THE SOURCE MAGAZINE (May 2007), quite an accomplishment for a new artist with no major label backing!

Point Blank is a Canadian hip-hop group from Toronto, Ontario. Formed in 1992, the group is composed of six emcees—Imperial, Trouble, Stump, Kidd, RPD, and Jackal—and one producer, Pikihed. The group collectively founded and operates their own imprint label, Tilt Rock Records, which currently has a distribution agreement with Koch Entertainment Canada, one of the country’s largest independent music distributors. The group has released several singles and videos such as “Thin Line”, “Want It Wit Us”, and “Born and Raised in the Ghetto” (a 2007 MuchMusic Video Award nominee).
Growing up together in Toronto’s Regent Park, Canada’s oldest and largest housing project, their music reflects the culture and social issues faced by many inner city youth. Issues such as single parenting, racial profiling, systemic poverty and police harassment are explored through their lyrics and beats.
Benny Blacc is a founding member of the legendary Smugglaz street rapper crew from the infamous corridors of Jane and Finch in Toronto. This eclectic mix of music illustrates the evolution of one of Canada’s pioneering hip-hop artists. Benny Blacc first hit the scene with his partner Sticky Green of The Smugglaz with the hit single “Street Rappers” in 2000 that aired across Canada on MuchMusic television and later documented by CBC National News in prime time making history for Toronto street rappers.
Now, Benny Blacc, through many trials and tribulations has returned with a solo effort entitled Blacc By Popular Demand that hits iTunes today and later on will be shipped to HMV stores across Canada. Guest features include JB and Yung Jixx of GCP, Sticky Green of Smugglaz, and many more. To listen to some of the songs included on the album go to http://www.youtube.com/smugglaztv, http://www.myspace.com/thesmugglaz or http://itunes.com/bennyblacc.
This fall, along with browning autumn leaves and a drop in the temperature comes a humble offering that will no-doubt warm you . September 3rd, 2010, The Scale Breakers are set to release ‘Leftovers’, the prequel serving to their studio album ‘FOOOOD’, a meal due to be served early 2011.
This record is the culmination of both technique and precise measurement. Both Sub & Guy have raided the pantry to get this project cooked up fresh, just in time for the Canadian tour planned under the same name. ‘Leftovers’ was originally intended to be a mixtape, just a few tasty hors-deovres to fill the bellies of hungry SB fans nationwide until the release of the studio album. Unfortunately plans changed after comments regarding early orders were coming back so positive, so instead it was agreed upon ‘Leftovers’ would be more than a sample, giving ample time for 2011’s masterpiece to thaw out…
