DJ Spinna returns to his roots on Underground Forever, unearthing a classic mix of independently released singles and sleeper favorites from the mid 90s. Before the era of online sharing and instant downloads, mixtapes were the lifeblood of the Hip Hop underground in New York. Names like DJ Premier, DJ Clue, DJ Doo Wop, Kid Capri, Enuff, Cipha Sounds and Tony Touch had their finger on the pulse of the city’s emerging backpack movement, which took the culture back to basics: self-released records, word-of-mouth buzz and musical innovation.
Shadow People are the hip-hop group consisting of rappers Josh Johnz and Broken English, along with DJ/Producer Audiodrome. Cousins Josh Johnz and Broken English, along with longtime friend Audiodrome, began working together as Shadow People in early 2007. For years Josh Johnz and Broken English played shows under the name Psymantiks performing throughout Minneapolis and St. Paul at such venues as Barfly, The Cabooze, The Red Sea, and The Dinkytowner among others. Psymantiks released The Bootleg Volume 1 in 2004. Shadow People’s music is best described as a combination of strategic beats underneath witty-aggressive lyrics.

Well… it looks like The Chef isn’t the only Wu member bringing back a classic. Earlier today RZA confirmed rumors of him being on the producing end of GZA’s next album. With OBLCL2 being as amazing as it was is, I’m hoping for the best. But if I see/hear a Curtis diss (or anything of that matter) I’m throwing up in everyone’s cereal. Fact.

For years, there have been whispers of a Killarmy reunion…whispers that at times seemed like nothing more than wishful thinking dreamt up by nostalgic fans who refused to accept that the era of grimey, militant hip-hop was over. Half the members of the group never seemed to be able to stay out of prison, and those that did often and mysteriously chose to stay out of the spotlight. For almost a decade, fans have patiently waited for a follow up to 2001’s excellent “Fear, Love & War”, (a criminally slept on album that unfortunately coincided with the collapse of Loud Records, and therefore never got the push it deserved). Well, it seems now that the wait is over! Die-hard fans will finally have their thirst for that militant shit quenched this year, as the seminal collective known as Killarmy will be releasing their much anticipated fourth group effort later this year. The triumphant return kicks off in June with the premier of “The Sound of Gunz”, a Bronze Nazareth laced masterpiece which will reintroduce the world to “The 6 Man Wetting”. There is also an accompanying video in the works to provide the visual thrills. Look for a big announcement from Killarmy coming very soon. I have been told directly that production duties will be handled by all of the Wu-Elements’ heavy hitters: RZA, True Master, Allah Mathematics, 4th Disciple & Bronze Nazareth. Also, there will be guest shots from Clan members, as well as Killa Beez. This album is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated Wu-related projects of all time.
