I think anyone with two ears and a drop of common sense know that hip hop isn’t dead, and as we swerve into a new decade of music I truly believe we are heading into one of the most legendary years of millennium hip hop thus far.
My love for the new generation of MCs and producers began to bloom when I stopped trying to listen to every new schmuck with a microphone and a laptop and instead focused on what was coming out in certain geographical areas that consistently shelled out fresh and original records time after time. Detroit, Los Angeles, and the DMV (DC/Maryland/Virginia) are those fresh fledgling spots on the map that I never take my ear off of and after a unbeatable 2009 showing from each community, I’m wondering why you aren’t focused on them too?
To end another solid week of 2010 hip hop, I give to you yet another vintage and virulent showing from the DMV with The Basics EP from beatsmith, Dunc, and PG County MC, Toine, also known as DTMD (Dunc Toing Makin’ Dollas).
You might know Dunc from his contributions to the 2009 Album of the Year candidate from fellow DMVers, Diamond District, with their album, In The Ruff. Much like the neck noddin’ track, “Shining,” Dunc laces the EP with smooth samples and plump production that accompanies Toine’s terminology perfectly.

In the case of the second full-length that multi-instrumentalist Tom Filepp is releasing under the name Cars & Trains, the answer would amount to about 75 percent inorganic material.
Like fellow musical polymaths Tunng and Tune-Yards, Filepp patches his rather straightforward folk and pop songs — tracks that are anchored by traditional instruments like acoustic guitar, banjo and glockenspiel — with the warp and clatter and thud of modern electronic production styles.
It’s a welcome addition to his sound, however, and one that feels natural throughout the 10 tracks of “The Roots, the Leaves.” In fact, unlike his peers, these songs would be nearly insubstantial without it. A song such as “The Birds in Your Chest” is threadbare at its core, led as it is by a sparse guitar line and rambling vocals. But with the spacey warble of a synthesizer in the background and a programmed beat that sounds like it was constructed from samples of ball bearings clinking together, it feels fuller and surprisingly warmer.
For an album that concerns itself musically with the tension between natural and unnatural sounds, it stands to reason that Filepp would address these same ideas lyrically. In fact, the most potent theme that carries through most of the songs concerns that most natural of acts: dying.
Filepp worries about the impermanence of life as it relates most often to the permanent marks we humans leave behind on the planet, or, as he does on “Asleep on a Train,” wonders aloud, “The air that I displace/won’t even remember my name/or any other details/of the lines in my face.” It’s a stirring statement that sets the tone for a stirring album.

One of my favorite things about social networking and the internet is that I find at least one dope artist, song, record, or video from one of my friends or “tweeples” every day, and as a slave to music there is nothing better. Yesterday, I got a hold of a 2009 mixtape from an Ohio bred MC I’ve never heard of before, Stalley. The Mixtape, MadStalley: The Autobiography, is the new smooth sultan of mid-west hip hop swing going bananas over re-worked Madlib instrumentals. If I had caught wind of this last year, there is no question that Stalley’s showcase would have appeared on all of my end of the year lists and mixes.
2010 looks to be an even bigger year for the rising talent, as he readies a collaboration project with the wild wizards of whimsical weirdness in Sa-Ra Creative Partners and has locked numerous features on an upcoming Ski Beatz mixtape.

Taiyamo Denku (Tie-yam-oo Den-koo) One of hip hops hardest workers,
has already established his sound on albums with his group
W.A.S.T.E.L.A.N.D.S. the group who put together the Chi Mil Music
Empire. Which also consists of artists Jaylacage of Louisville, KY
and Angela Malone of Racine, WI as well as producers Masako Son
known to Denku as “Grendal” and Dave Derrilykt of the crew S.A.P.
Denku crash landed from hip hops womb in Milwaukee, WI in 1996,
giving him 11 years in the making of his style and technique.
Most refer to him as just another jabber jaw that don’t make sense,
trying to make sense of things around him, when in reality Denku
just takes a deeper look into things and puts his thoughts in
writing, and paints an adventure thru-which your ears and mind
are either ready or not ready to journey to.
So lets take a journey thru “Dark Journal of Thornwards”,
Denku’s Debut solo masterpiece. An Album which features the likes
of Keith Murray of Def Squad, as well as “lyrical Jesus” Chino XL,
just to name a few. The album emits Power from the start with the
intro “Epicalligraphy” where Denku just showcases style in a
freeverse form over a epic beat dropped by BadAbbot. From that
point travels into the Dark transformation of a group member to a
solo artist in the song “Waiting Moment”. Traveling your mind thru
up and downs thru Denku’s Dark style over emotion-filled beats
brought to you from DJ Vadim of Ninja Tune Records, as well as
Dub-L who if your not familiar with has pretty much single handedly
made a classic debut Aesop Rock Album “Music for Earthworms”.
Also providing the vibes on the album is Cryptic One of Atoms Fam,
as well as Nasa of Uncommon Records, BadAbbot, Anabolic, and more.
Plus of coarse Denku had to bring the Chi Mil Family producers in
the mix with Grendal and Dave Derrilykt together producing a total
of 4 tracks on the project. When Denku Teams up with Chino XL on
the track “Passion of Lyrics” it pretty much sets the ride of the
rest of the album thru pure, abstract difference, where if you’re
a fan of Denku is a good thing. From beginning to end The album
never falters or reaches a point where there is something that
does not belong it has a track for everyone, some tracks might
be hit or miss, but if you don’t feel at least one track from the
project then you wouldn’t know “real hip hop” if it smacked you in
the face. Denku tried to bring hip hop back a dope album that the
heads can appreciate, hopefully if you copped the album you feel it,
drop your thoughts here, stay hip hop peoples.
With this album and other project Denku has gotten down with a lot
of dope and known or not so known peeps that the hip hop world
either has heard of or hasn’t. He has linked with Chino XL,

at the hip hop industry and is Chi Mil Entertainment’s second
official release. This album takes you through a Rise of New
Creative hip hop, where W.A.S.T.E.L.A.N.D.S. is structuring an
Empire with Lyrics, Creativity, and showing their love for the
what seems to be the dying life of Hip Hop.The albums starts out
with a little spoken word peice from Augury that the group
decided to call “Precursor of Chaos” pretty much the leading
into the album that will make your mind flip in many directions
and patterns. With only a few features on the album, the group
W.A.S.T.E.L.A.N.D.S. feels it chose the right artists to fit
with them on the certian featured songs. Sun Zoo brings his
style on “House That I built” where Denku and Augury back him
up with building a House out of old-school documents and beat
machines making what we live in as artists the House of Hip Hop.
Hangar 18 brings thier B-Boy type rhymes and flow patterns on the
song Shelter produced by Nasa(Uncommon Records) featuring
DJ ShortRock on the cuts. This song is a very standout song on
the album. Be on the look out for the song “Shelter” featuring
Hangar 18 on the album , it is a very dope song. The final
feature on the album welcomes Kentucky bred native,
Deacon The Villain on the song “Sprinkle of God”. For those who
don’t know Deacon belongs to the group “Cunninglynguists” and
is signed with Qn5 records. He brings a very different vibe to
the song and pulls it together nicely. Overall this album looks
to have great potential of the album to place W.A.S.T.E.L.A.N.D.S.
into many more peoples ears, maybe yours will be included.

Another classic ep from ILLUS. This one was recorded in the winter of ’02 with a Brazilian artist known as Peov. This is more experimental and eclectic but still exudes the passion, heart, soul and lyrics ILLUS is known for. These old school gems are a must have, especially since the buzz around ILLUS is growing and he is supposedly in negotiations with a major label. Inglewood, California bred MC, Kida, has walked an interesting path in his hip hop career. From his humble beginnings as a Roc-A-Fella Records street promoter to declining a recording contract from Death Row Records CEO, Suge Knight, Kida’s climb to the top never came without putting in work first.
Now, following his rise to blog fame in 2009, Kida blasts of the new year with an extremely dope DJ Skee hosted compilation mixtape, The Endemic, featuring guest spots from Crooked I, Kurupt, Talib Kweli, and Busta Rhymes. I came to know Kida after KevinNottingham dropped the 9th Wonder laced, Fight this Feelin’, and haven’t stopped listening since. This mixtape is a perfect introduction to the MC’s style & production taste, and will also show listeners why I call him the long lost fourth member of Little Brother.

This is how we be getting down in Killa Cali, from Crenshaw to Hollywood, this is a straight West Coast release, Reppin Los Angeles to all across the world. Secondly, Every song on this cd is mixed differently. Lyrically, flow-wide, they are all different. Thats the beauty of PLoo, is that there are so many hidden flows, its fun finding them all out. Deathwish is for those who didnt believe or think Ploo was really that lyrical, because it is. All the hardcore rhymes are hidden between each other, In the different layers. There are even a few storytelling songs on this CD, so listen carefully for that. Hopefully this cd will show some of the potential of how brilliant Ploo really is. Im not competing with anybody or any other mixers, I am merely showing my interpretation of infinity and trying to add on to all the great song and mixes that has been made already. Mixing is fun and I really tried to make this CD fun for the listener, making this the Canibus album that I have always wanted to hear.

Killa Sha, a veteran rapper from Queensbridge, has died. Unkut.com is reporting that Killa Sha died due to complications from diabetes. Planet Asia also confirmed the Killa Sha’s death via Twitter. While never being a huge mainstream star, Killa Sha, who also recorded under the name Sha Lumi, carved out an impressive career in hip-hop. Killa Sha had a long-standing partnership with Tragedy Khadafi and was a member of The Super Kids. During his career, he maintained ties to legendary Queensbridge rappers Mobb Deep and worked with artists such as Prodigy, Havoc, Jedi Mind Tricks, Tragedy and Screwball. He will be missed, may you rest in peace!
-BIOGRAPHY-
Born and raised in the notorious and historical Queensbridge Houses of New York City, Sha-Lumi has had a front row seat to the evolution of hip hop since day one. While being inspired by some of hip hops most influencial pioneers, including Marley Marl, MC Shan, and Biz Markie, Sha has maintained to create a flavor of his very own. Sha first began his career in hip hop as a dj and producer for a group called The Super Kids. The group consisted of himself, Craig G., and Tragedy. Their only release was a 12 single on Nia Records in 1986 called The Tragedy (Dont Do It). Unfortunately, the group later separated. Never being one to slouch, Sha kept focused and began to dj for the infamous Mobb Deep. This was when the world tours began!!! Little did everyone know that on the side Sha was honing his rhyme skills. As time went by, with the skills rapidly improving, Sha formed the group Killa Kidz. The group consisted of himself, Psycho Child (a.k.a. Mr. Challish), Mr. Ruck, and Baby Sham. Their only release was a 12 single on Young Life Records in 1996 called 96 Phenomenon. Mr. Challish and Mr. Ruck were also featured on Nas Q.B.s Finest gold compilation album and Baby Sham went on to join Busta Rhymes Flipmode Squad. In the midst of shopping the Killa Kidz material to various record labels Sha was reunited with his old protg, Tragedy. This reunion proved to be crucial since Sha was to be featured on 5 songs on Tragedys Against All Odds LP. If he didnt have enough on his plate already with the rapping, djing, and producing, in 2000 Killa Sha joined forces with famed NYC radio personality Stretch Armstrong to host The Extra Large Radio Show on Hot 97 (W.Q.H.T.). He also went on to host shows worldwide with Stretch in Japan, Austria, France, and Germany. Over the past few years Sha has been aggressively building his collection of solo material. In 2007 he finally dropped his long awaited solo LP…here it is.

RJD2 returns with the highly anticipated 4th solo LP The Colossus’.
