When he isn’t making suicide threats or drinking excessivly, Dirty Hank a.k.a Adolph Oliver Bush is an MC. He recently spent 6 months working 7 songs in which he compiled
into an EP titled, “Dirty Hank’s Guide to Giving Up”. This unique presentation of random acts of fuckery bleeds pain, anger, frustration, sexual angst, and disgust – all
beautifully blended over production from acclaimed Providence beatsmith Falside, and up and comer Mad Plaid. Providence wordsmith, Reason of the Poorly Drawn People collective
was pressured into making an appearence on “Fade to Wack” and “Overselpt”. If your not left feeling deprived and anxious after listening to “Dirty Hank’s Guide to Giving Up”,
somebody didn’t do their job.

One of my favorite things to do online is make mixes for new hip hop fans that introduce them to a classic artists they might not be familiar with. After doing Tha Alkaholiks, EPMD, and De La Soul, I made it a point to do more independent hip hop mixes in 2010.

Recently, a Zion I discussion was sparked after the announcement of their Winter Tour schedule with reggae bands Rebolution and SOJA. I’ve seen Zion I five times live and will always praise them for having one of the best live hip hop shows I have ever seen. After recommending their live show to a few friends in Texas and Orlando, they requested a “introduction” mix that they could show their (non- indie hip hop listening) friends that would help lure them to go see the show. Bless: The Beginners Guide to Zion I— should do just that.

This 21-track mix features tracks from every studio LP Zion I has released and is a great beginning listen to one of the dopest acts in hip hop today. Be on the look out for more beginner guides from The Grouch, Scarub, Blackalicious/Gift of Gab, and more coming soon!

Release Notes:

Made from scratch; a truly homemade album of natural
freshness and awesomeness!!!

In the book “The Nasty Bits” the chef and writer Anthony
Bourdain refers to System D – the MacGyverish, git-r-done,
don’t look too closely at how many eggs got busted in
pursuit of an omelet approach that professional cooks use to
get dinner on the table, no matter what. The foundational
Minneapolis hip-hop group Unknown Prophets took System D as
their title for this album, their fourth album, and first
since 2006’s The Road Less Traveled, and so present this 11
course prix-fixe meal designed to satisfy the deepest
hungers. Like the hunger in rap for musicians who can play
their own instruments – when Jay-Z called for hip-hop to pay
attention to bands like Grizzly Bear he had no way of
knowing that at that very moment MaD SoN was composing this
album on guitar. And the hunger of Big Jess to use rap to
address more than bling and shopping, to take on existential
issues like the propensity of the universe to ignore us, or
as he says in track 6, “Don’t you ever feel like
screaming/at the top of your lungs for no reason/in the
middle of a crowded place/and people stare at you like
you’re from outer space” In restaurants they call cooking
that incorporates the influence of many cuisines Fusion; If
Le System D was a meal you’d call if a Fusion of underground
dance artists like the Avalanches (see track 5 for more on
this), hard rock, and swift, playful elegant rhyme in the
style of early Eminem, but in Big Jess,Willy Lose, and MaD
SoN’s hands this fusion cooking is far more than the sum of
its parts, it’s a new cuisine, an unforgettable meal, a
satisfying repast that proves that it truly is far better to
have a meal prepared by chefs who have been kicking around
the kitchen enough to know their way around a knife.

Hate Face, the lead single from LSD, features the
Seattle-based rapper Grieves- recently featured as MySpace’s
Indie Artist to watch for. The song is a “love gone bad”
break up song with a killer hook and a catchy melody.
Doomtree powerhouse producer Lazerbeak and newcomer
Chickenbone trade production licks with Big Jess on the
instrumental cut “Tap Dance.” The song “Forever” features
Swedish MC Promoe of the Swede Grammy winning group
Looptroop Rockers. “Fresh” is another warm weather anthem
featuring South Minneapolis’ own New MC and the beautiful
vocals of Alicia Steele. Portland based rapper Braille lends
his skills to “Explore”. “What I Live For” set to be the
second single from LSD, is another catchy track that lends
it’s inspiration from the long and cold winter months here
in Minnesota.

Dillon Maurer, who you might know from last year’s release with Paten Locke called Studies in Hunger, has just released a dope Valentines Day EP, Dillon- Cupid’s Revenge: The Ain’t Shit Suite. Over 5 Batsauce laced tracks, Dillon explores the topic of Love and all “thangs” associated. That’s when he realizes that outer space must be where all the women are at who understand his steez.

On this six hour live radio thriller we have:

Freeway joins us live from the studio to talk Roc A Fella, Jay-Z, Beanie Sigel, Islam and much more, in a rare interview with one of hip hop’s most productive.

Young Chris is an artist who has openly rejected deals with such colossal hip hop labels as Def Jam, Interscope, yet remains upbeat as he oozes his confidence onto our show. He talks of his relationship with Dame Dash, Jay-Z and of course the reasons behind some of his major career decisions.

N.O.R.E. Noreaga is in an exhilarated mood as we take time to explore the new CNN album War Report 2. We talk DJ Premier,Tragedy Khadafi, recreating the buzz of the CNN debut and of course, indulge in a heart-warming discussion about Big Pun. Noreaga was one of Pun’s best friends and tells us of his fondest unpublicised memories, as well as the news of the exclusive Big Pun music on its way. We even talk Cormega vs Freddie Foxx.

When celebrating the life of Big Pun, nobody is more qualified with first hand information than his wife, Liza Rios. She takes time away form a wake to reminisce on her husbands legacy, as we discuss the joys and pains of Big Punisher, including the new music of Pun’s children and their aspirations for 2010.

Sadat X is an enthralling artist and the passion that flows through his heart for hip hop. is undeniably unrivaled. As well as discussing his new album Wild Cowboys 2, we allow Sadat to explain his extreme shock and frustration at not being allowed to attend the VH1 Hip Hop Honours. He has his own opinions on Freddie Foxx.

Statik Selektah is one of hip hop’s most hard-working and gifted producers. His new album is as strong an album as you are likely to hear all year and he joins us literally minutes before his radio show with Pete Rock, to talk optimism, wastemen artists and those that paid no attention to him until his recent recognition.

DJ RJD2 joins us for an in-depth exploration of his career and new album,a s we explore the early MHz days and all of the artists he has worked with since, Essential listening for all aspiring producers and musicians.

AND THAT’S NOT ALL!

Shade Sheist and Nune speak with clarity and experience on the major problems with Westcoast hip hop, the importance of unity and chemistry and the disgusting politics involved with the current music scene. One of our most informative and assuring interviews to date,as Shade and Nune take us on a journey through the minds of two of hip hop’s most contained talents.

Enjoy!
