At first the “Fools Play” EP sounds like a romantic 8-track story full of heart. But a closer listen catches the bittersweet nature of the tale told by soulful storytellers 72 Soul, Brise and Roxy. The clearly recognizable sample of Leroy Hutson’s “Cool Out”, subtly reworked by Belgian beatmaker LuiGi, serves as a melodic backdrop for 72 Soul’s poetic story on “Fool Is Blind”. It’s followed by a thumping bass and laid back melodies by Akello Light on “She Likes To Play”, the romance’s musical sequel.

Just imagine if this happened and picture the setting… It’s the late 1930’s and local jazz club is packed to the brim with people awaiting the rapper Nas and his jazz musicians (orchestrated by Funky DL) along with featured artists to come and play a 10-track set to forever be remembered. The lights are dim and the hall is filled with smoke, whilst the clinking sound of champagne flutes ambiently gesture in the atmosphere. Nas and Funky DL are having their picture taken outside the club in an array of spotlights glaring from their vehicles (see artwork). Then it happens… The two step inside the club and “JAZZMATIC” erupts … All you have to do now is… “press play”…

After a scene-stealing appearance on Alchemist’s new album Russian Roulette and some buzz-building early singles, hip-hop’s newest supergroup is ready to take the spotlight. Consisting of Cali-bred emcees Planet Asia, Killer Ben, and Tristate, Durag Dynasty is the latest project presented by Alchemist, the producer behind tracks for the likes of Eminem, Lil Wayne, Nas, Mobb Deep, Fat Joe, and more. Durag Dyansty’s debut album 360 Waves (entirely produced by Alchemist) hits stores everywhere on March 26th, 2013.
While Planet Asia has enjoyed an extensive career dating back to the late 90s, Killer Ben and Tristate are newer artists. Fortunately, the latter two are no less capable of rocking the mic, and both get a stamp of approval from Alchemist. “Tristate is a professional wizard,” he says. “Killer Ben is a rare combination of a certified larynx surgeon and a schoolyard bully.” Joining the three co-stars is a star-studded lineup of guests, including Prodigy, Evidence, Phil The Agony, Chace Infinite, and more. Expect head-nodding hip-hop and, in Alchemist’s words, “stretchable polyester rhythms.”
