This EP was released in Detroit around 1997. I don’t even have the original disc anymore – just this CD-R burn from many years ago. The cover art was basically a photo of a turntable platter with a bunch of scattered spraypaint caps and other B-Boy paraphenelia – very old school. It was a decidedly underground local effort.
Track two on this CD is “Drastic Measures” which, of course, has garnered some degree of fame for its early-era Slim Shady (Eminem) cameo verse.
Also worth noting here is the somewhat confrontational “Detroit scene” lyrical jab in the first track: “ICP is overrated and hated for the false identity created” which now surely falls on different ears with eras gone by.

Fresh off the heels of his lyrical onslaught “Wasted Talent” the one and only renowned Emcee ‘The Legend’ Adam Bomb delivers another scorching commentary with his contribution to S.A.R.S 8 ‘The New Strain’ entitled “Make Good Music”. Bold statements and unrelenting flows are directed at the lack of quality control and the watered down state of hip hop in 2011. Anyone who compromises their integrity as an artist for commercial radio is now a target as there’s no more time, space or excuse for artists who don’t “Make Good Music!’

Another T-DOT marksman with flawless deliveries and lyrics of fury, Louwop (The Dirty General) is a MC’s MC none of this young fake thug drug slinging bullshit that seems to plague our city just as much as others. Toronto has substance worth listening to, this album allows heads to give a sign of relief, there are true artists in this city who know how to rock mics still maintaining that same boom bap feel simply elevated to a higher level. “The Spic Who Sat By The Door “was inspired by award-winning black literary tradition The Spook Who Sat By The Door, a novel about one man’s reaction to oppression as he masters CIA tactics and forms a freedom fighting regime. Louwop’s own soulful hip hop has militant overtones of prophecy, honesty and introspection. With a strong independent vibe, his music hearkens the lost era of hip hop, evoking comparisons to Common, Black Thought (of The Roots), Rakim and Nas. For Louwop, life is about freedom to be and the strength of inner revolution for universal revolution. As he puts it, “We can’t change anything without changing ourselves first, so my revolution is my change from who I am to who I want to be – ultimately, to be a better man.” The album contains 11 solid tracks featuring production from PhD, Dj Catalist, S.Banger and Murr of The Grass Roots with guest appearences by Elohim Marino, Galactus and Stic Man of Dead Prez. – DIRTYDOTBOOMBAP

Livin’ Proof is the debut album from Gang Starr affiliates Group Home. The album featured the hit underground single “Supa Star” and featured the acclaimed production work of the legendary DJ Premier. The album is known both for the supposed sub-par rhyming and superior instrumental work. It is widely considered to be Premier’s most focused work to date but is often overshadowed by his work with more proficient emcees. Premier produced every song on the album except for “Serious Rap Shit” and “4 Give My Sins,” which were produced by Guru and Big Jaz, respectively.

BLOODY MONK CONSORTIUM is an underground hardcore hip-hop group assembled through a long distance collaboration initiative, and fused together by 3 primary figures. West coast Prod. Lex Luger and rapper Leeroy Destroy both from East San Jose, California teamed up with with East coast rapper LABAL-S from Southern New Jersey in early 2009 to form one of the most ferocious and highly skilled collectives the rap game has experienced in a long time. They have expanded the brand and incorporated strong alliances with international producers FuckRICO(Finland) DJ ShadowFist(Slovenia) and Graff writer Kebo(Italy) and continue to open its doors to more awe-inspiring talent worldwide. The group’s primary sound is utterly raw with explosively charged defiant combative rhyme sequences over dark brooding forceful beats. Their tenacious and relentless approach to verbally assault the sharpest of tracks is cleverly laced with grimey, brutal, horrific yet witty wordplay. They never cease to captivate and amaze the listener with their illicit, outrageous and often graphic content. Borderlining on horrorcore, the group bares little concern for an established genre category and ventures to parts unknown to most underground acts. Consistently showcasing a barrage of fearless “musical mayhem” and an endless array ability , the entourage is viciously focused on putting their permanent stamp on the industry.
The marriage of hip-hop and social justice has been an essential union ever since Melle Mel changed the game with tales of broken glass and urine soaked project stair cases decades ago. In fact, it is the spirit of resistance and activism that can be credited with the birth of hip-hop as a genre. However, what started as the critical, uncompromising voice of oppressed youth of African descent has been high-jacked by corporate interests and turned into a largely materialistic and self-destructive exercise set to watered down beats. There are very few artists left who seek to re-connect with hip-hop’s true roots of struggle and resistance, Progress is one of those artists. As an aspiring revolutionary, he is committed to the total liberation of oppressed peoples across the globe.
In his first official video release, “As I Reflect…”, Progress mixes raw social commentary with clever world play, helping to usher in a new renaissance of so-called “conscious” hip-hop. In his creation of this video’s concept, Progress aimed to give realistic, political information to viewers as they “reflect” on his offering. The track is produced by Freedom Writers heavy-hitter Big Sproxx, who also directed the debut video.
