Mac Lethal – North Korean BBQ Mixtape (2011)

In the Midwestern region of the country, we feel the seasons much more intensely than the rest of the world. As I type this, it is 40 degrees outside. Last night it was 33 degrees outside. Yesterday it was 90 degrees outside. This type of unpredictable shifting in weather and city-vibe can deeply affect people’s emotions and overall feelings about life and such.

I guess this mixtape was an exercise in keeping myself sane during the dark, bitterly cold Kansas City winter months. Mostly chronicling and processing an extremely serious, devastating breakup, the overall feeling of sadness about loss and aging, the constant struggle we all face with vices and exogenous substances, and accepting emotional, mental and physical damage (whether self-inflicted, or done by someone else.)

North Korean BBQ is for old souls. People 30+ (figuratively and literally.)

The title, however, is a reminder for me and all of us, that no matter how hard life can seem. We are all very fortunate people to live where we live. In Kansas City, when we get lonely or depressed, we go gorge ourselves on delicious, molasses-based BBQ. In North Korea, they don’t get lonely or depressed. They don’t choose feelings or thoughts. North Koreans don’t eat BBQ. They eat octopus skin and fried white corn. I was looking through audio clips from old North Korean documentaries to mix in with the music, but honestly, I felt like I was being lighthearted about their situation, which is greatly serious.

I must remind you of something, though: THIS IS NOT A POLITICAL PIECE OF MUSIC. NO!

This is NOT a political statement, but an examination on the self-entitlement we feel while bathing in our own excess and drama. I’m sorry your boyfriend broke up with you, but treasure the good times you did have. Bump this mixtape as a way to help push those negative, volatile emotions out, BUT…always remember that below the surface, life is truly a beautiful, pleasant work of art for some of us. Unfortunately it takes looking at other people’s situations to realize that sometimes.

Shouts to everyone oppressed by Kim Jong-il. I wish we could help. Holler fool.

Swollen Members was founded in the mid-1990s by Vancouverites Mad Child (Shane Bunting), Prevail (Kiley Hendriks), and Moka Only (Daniel Denton). Having begun a solo career while living in San Francisco, California, Mad Child returned to Vancouver to work. There he met Prevail and Moka Only, who had been working together. They joined together under the name Swollen Members. In 1997, Mad Child and Prevail went to the B-Boy Summit in San Diego, California, where Mad Child won several rap battles and was initiated into the Rock Steady Crew. The crew is held in great respect as hip hop’s highest collective – to join one must win a contest of skill against one of the highest ranked members. Swollen Members is one of only three rap groups affiliated with Rock Steady, Others include Dilated Peoples and The Arsonists. Their first releases were three 12″ singles on Mad Child’s record label Battleaxe Records, between the years of 1996 and 1998, then came the debut album Balance in 1999. Balance received wide critical acclaim and has been claimed by the band to have sold in excess of 50000 copies. Featuring collaborations with artists such as Everlast, Divine Styler, and Dilated Peoples, the album received the 2001 Juno Award for Best Rap Recording.

To properly introduce Relic one must first trek back to DJ Complejo’s Shad review from January of 2008. While P didn’t mention any specific producers by name, he gave the “outstanding crew of producers” who worked on Shad’s album 10 out of 10, and praise at RR doesn’t get any higher than that! As it turns out, Relic just happens to be one of those producers, as the bio accompanying “The Green Light” notes that he did production and mixing on BOTH Shad albums reviewed on this website along with providing a vocal or two. That’s not the sum total of Relic’s experience in the music industry though – the Brampton, Ontario based artist has done work for artists on either side of the Canadian border from Manafest to Sev Statik all while building his own Resevoir Studio to bang out beats and rhymes.

Mixed by DJ Flash and hosted by Statik Selektah, the one-track, “old-school style” mix blends segments from 14 of the 19 new and previously-released cuts set to appear on the EP.
