Copyright Criminals examines the creative and commercial value of musical sampling, including the related debates over artistic expression, copyright law, and (of course) money.

This documentary traces the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. For more than thirty years, innovative hip-hop performers and producers have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new, otherwise original compositions. When lawyers and record companies got involved, what was once referred to as a “borrowed melody” became a “copyright infringement.” The film showcases many of hip-hop music’s founding figures like Public Enemy, De La Soul, and Digital Underground—while also featuring emerging hip-hop artists from record labels Definitive Jux, Rhymesayers, Ninja Tune, and more.

It also provides an in-depth look at artists who have been sampled, such as Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown’s drummer and the world’s most sampled musician), as well as commentary by another highly sampled musician, funk legend George Clinton.As artists find ever more inventive ways to insert old influences into new material, this documentary asks a critical question, on behalf of an entire creative community: Can you own a sound?

on 2009’s hard-hitting collaboration Survival
Skills, legendary old-school Bronx, NY rapper
KRS-One (Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Everyone)
tosses another lyrical grenade into the fray
with this explosive six-track EP. Over stellar
beats provided by Da Beatminerz, Freddie Foxxx,
JS-1, and DJ Kenny Parker, The Blastmaster
investigates conspiracy theories on “Teknology,”
calls out sucker MCs (again) on “Never Afraid,”
and disses commercial has-beens on “Wolf.”
His delivery is as raw and biting as when
he first burst upon the underground hip-hop

The SF-by-LA producer Shlohmo (aka Henry Laufer) returns with Camping, a digi-EP celebrating the May 24th first-run vinyl release of this year’s Shlohmoshun Deluxe LP. Having already headlined LA’s premiere beat-based party, Low End Theory as well as being featured by XLR8R, the BBC (Mary Anne Hobbs), LA Times and more, Shlohmo is on the tip of the ear for those attuned to the spaced out beat scene led by Flying Lotus, Ras G, & Nosaj Thing, among others…

As far as titles go, Camping is particularly apropos; the outdoor and indoor collide as Shlohmo’s selection of found sounds rub up agianst the technology of 8-bit blap & subwoofer stress tests in three new tracks. Additional amenities include remixes from hotly tipped LA music maker Baths and fellow up-and-comer Asura (on the AWESOME new LA label, Non Projects) as well as recent Ghostly International signing Shigeto. There’s also a rework from Shloh’ himself, flipping Shlohmoshun Deluxe opener “Tomato Squeeze” into “Tomato Smash.” — FoF Music

Introducing…..”Quality Control”, a crew that consists of Sharp(of Thump Connection/ Hazardous Soundz Ent.) & cRITICAL (of Critical Madness/Creative Juices/ Hidden Agenda) along with a slew of other founding members that include emceez, djs, producers & graff artists. Their 2 hometown crews originally united in the late 90’s in Central Florida after several years of building in cypherz, crashing open mics & rockin’ at the same house parties. In other words, the roots are thick and the bond formed naturally which is evident from the organic chemistry demonstrated on their latest project titled “Toxic Therapy”. This Radioactive masterpiece stays true to their unique formula that will have tape headz blowin’ the dust off of their cassette crates to inject another dose of that analog vaccine that hip hop scientist fiend for!
