With many producer-driven LPs, there exists an inherent difficulty in achieving a solid level of sonic cohesion. For one, many of these types of albums are typically uneven in quality and sound pieced together in a random fashion. L.A.-born, NYC-based producer Belief hopes to change that idea with the release of his debut LP, Dedication. Employing the impressive vocal talents of Murs, Wordsworth, Vordul Mega (of Cannibal Ox fame) and C-Rayz Walz, Belief has little work to do in coaxing the occasional all-star performance from the featured MCs. Belief’s production style is best described as dense, soulful Hip Hop layered with full original instrumentation.

So in honor of Strictly Beats’ one year anniversary, I’ve decided to do a post about one of my favorite producers, Lord Finesse. This guy is well known as being one of the golden age producers, along with Buckwild, Diamond D, DJ Premier, Showbiz, Pete Rock, K-Def, Large Professor, Marley Marl, Da Beatminerz, Easy Mo Bee, and so forth. If you haven’t heard this guy, don’t sleep on this. I would say this guy is as good, if not better than Buckwild or Easy Mo Bee. Anyways, there are 39 instrumentals for you to kick back and blaze to. I thought it was appropriate to add this on since Nawl did one of these. First off, I’d like to thank all of the bloggers because we’ve built a blog with a completely unorganized fashion. I think one of the tools I use most often is the search box, to see whether what I wanna post has been posted yet. But anyways, thanks to Nawl, first off. This dude should really be thanked for opening my musical tastes up, and yours. He’s the master of finding the good free instrumental stuff, but he also has a knack for good music in general, such as his memorable Molemen posts, his Hydrabeats and Golden Era posts, and his other random indie instrumentalists. He adds an indie abstract touch to this blog. Andrew opened my eyes up to music that I perceive as flawless. He is constantly making me question the albums that I perceive as classic. He’s got me wondering if Lauryn Hill’s “classic” is just an average album. His ability to question classics makes me believe that I might have missed something that he saw. Espiv is a friend, and is always reliable when it comes to posting instrumentals that emcees can benefit from (i.e. freestyle to). He adds more to the great chemistry. Rob Steady, 9@Home, Mass Incorporated (where’s he been?), Dun, Swann, and Andy don’t stop by that much, but when they do it’s always cool to chat with ’em. Formed in 1996, Boogie and Lee Majors (A.K.A. Jason Rivera and Chris Ivery) first hooked up when both had guest appearances on an album by a mutual friend. At the time both were involved in separate projects, but maintained contact through local shows and open mic sessions around their home town of Detroit. When their separate musical ventures dissolved, an opportunity arose for a joint project: and AB/NRML was born.

The formula behind the way AB/NRML approaches hip-hop lies within the vast selection of musical influence which they draw inspiration from. Their deliberate choice to utilize a collection of producers who create soundscapes to complement their flows and not necessarily seeking to make the next hot hip-hop smash. Due to this, within the music you will feel aspects of everything from house music, trip-hop, rock, or electro – all married to hip-hop concepts.

Since forming, the guys have toured the USA with luminaries such as The Roots, Prince Paul, MF DOOM and Mr Len. Maintaining a golden-era mentality, the duo have often been compared to Souls of Mischief, The Pharcyde and Mos Def and Talib Kweli’s Black Star project.

Word… Well those of you that have been at this Blog since the beginning may remember its Humble Roots which started to grow over at DJ Espionage’s Blog 12 Inchers mainly in the C-Box initially. I believe the Concept was first kicked around by Andrew/Espionage/Myself & Swann, if my Memory Serves Me Correctly… Then other people became Interested as the Talks Furthered. I’m really glad that we got together to get this Spot going, also Really Glad that we are still here going strong 1 Year Later. I honestly didn’t think we’d have enough stuff to keep it going this long, haha… That obviously isn’t the Case. Joint project between beatmaker Mr. Hill (Grayskul, Kool Keith, etc.) and Barfly of Oldominion. 12 tracks in all with appearances by Coley Cole, Gatsby of Cancer Rising, Hyena, Destro and Snafu of Oldominion.

Party Fun Action Committee – a rap duo, not a Japanese lobbyist dedicated to hedonism — was formed by Blockhead and Jer to send up the wussier aspects of turn-of-the-millennium hip-hop, including rap-rock (Limp Bizkit), geek hop (MC Paul Barman), and assorted other easy targets (fratboys, Ja Rule, “intelligent” rappers). The fact that at least one member had a hype-heavy resumé himself (Blockhead productions have appeared on Aesop Rock and S.A. Smash releases, and he’s recorded for breakbeat haven Ninja Tune) did nothing to dull their surprisingly keen blade. Let’s Get Serious, a concept record arranged around two industry hacks discussing a demo tape, was released on Def Jux in mid-2003.
