“After years of hiding in the shadows of the Saskatoon, SK music scene while developing his own musical style, instrumental hip hop producer Marjen has put together his professional debut album ‘you are here. so am i.’, released on his own independent record label, Non-Existent Recordings. This project has a strong emphasis on melodies that range from dark to dream-like and drums that refuse to stay dull and repetitive and be relegated to the background, opting instead to make their presence known and confidently lead the songs. The result is a short, but powerful album whose songs gently, yet firmly, push aside the sometimes narrow boundaries of hip hop, as a result appealing to fans outside of the traditional hip hop audience as well. This is music made by a man who is not trying to reinvent the wheel of instrumental music, but rather trying to add his own personal piece to the bigger picture.”

BeatSociety is a showcase, where producers like Illmind, Oddisee, 88-Keys etc present their beats. They also have a website (under construction?) which “boasts over 350 producers and 4,000 beats from across the Globe.”

First of all: the quality of the video isn’t that great. It’s filmed by a dude in the crowd, so it’s all shaky and shit. But the sound is ok and the Beats are just bangin! See for yourself…

The group’s EP, Prequel, showcases its lyrics – which are mostly
of the introductory, “Here we are, check it out” – type, clean
beats and fitting production quality. Social Memory is Staj
Prezence (lyrics), Modest (production) and DJ Trizzac (cuts), and
often can be found playing around town with Chapel Hill locals
Common Ground and L in Japanese. The opener, “What is Social
Memory Complex?” backs up the idea given by the group’s name: this
music will have some thought behind it.The EP’s best beat comes
with “Suze” which breaks the straightforward feel of previous
tracks with a vocal sample (which is well-integrated), and a
darker feeling (which is neccessary for the lyrics).

A multi-talented MC/Producer/Filmmaker/Writer, Incks rises above
the common to strive for the exceptional. Hailing from Flatbush,
the heart of Brooklyn, Incks has been working towards the release
of Extra Estra after touring in Amsterdam & Belgium. In 2004, she
became the first woman to win the beat battle with
BanginBeats.com. She has performed on both sides of the Atlantic
including the Wetlands (NYC), Grants Tomb, Nuyorican Poets Caf
(NYC), Baggot Inn (NYC), The Five Spot (Brooklyn and
Philadelphia), Theater Romein (Leeuwarden,NL) Bitterzoet and
Paradiso (ADam, Netherlands).

On the Brooklyn scene for years, Incks has always been a student
of the industry. Having learned that freedom comes from ownership,
she founded Earmax Records in 1999 with producing-partner DJ Obah.
She is a featured performer on Shus Shusic (2005), The Proovs
Battle Mode (2005), Krewcials 25/8 (BBE, 2003), and B-Gyrl.coms
compilation CD B-Gyrl4Life. In addition, she has just started RPM
(Real Phresh Music) with her Dj/Producing partner Dj Silent as
well as pushing ahead with her film career. She is working on a
film, Ladies on the Mic, produced my Hank Shocklee (Bomb Squad)
and Jo-Anna Nina.
