He was part of this group, Inner Circle, back in the late 70’s/ early 80’s and he did various production work before & after that, mainly a drummer though. You might be familiar with Inner Circle from the theme song from COPS, you know, Bad Boys Bad Boys, Whatcha gon do…. Anyway, Horsemouth is ILL, pure dope, I don’t know if any of you have seen the movie Rockers or not, but he has a big role in that, it’s a fuckin hilarious flick if you haven’t seen it though, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT, pure Grimey Greazy Rastafari Street Shit. PS Again, regarding the Dilla fiasco, it is my opinion that we as bootleggers help share things with others. I am quite the downloader, but I also support the artists I know I like as well as I feel have deserved it for putting out quality stuff. Also, if an artist personally asks you to take his/her stuff down, it’s the least you can do to follow their wish, and move on. The Avalanches are a group from Australia whose debut CD “Since I Left You” quickly became a hip-hop classic. It also gained fame for it’s unheard of use of 1000s of samples. Enjoy.
Top Five Rappers & Producers So the other day I was sitting in math class bored as hell, when I decided to make a list of my “Top Five Rappers”. I was actually sitting at my desk when I was doing this, with my iPod in hand so I could scroll through the list of artists and come up with some names. Right before I even began looking through the artists, I came up with three off the top of my head: Big L, Big Punisher, and Nas. At this point I was like, holy shit, this is gonna be easy. I then came up with a list of other possible candidates for the last two. These c
andidates were: Rakim, Method Man, AZ, Canibus, and 2Pac. I rationalized that although Method Man was a big player in the game he didn’t show enough prowess alone, and Rakim is a legend for sure and it’s rumored that he even produced the Eric B. & Rakim stuff but same as Meth, he just hasn’t showed his skills outside of his roots (a.k.a. Eric B. & Rakim). Then, I sat there for like, fifteen minutes trying to decide on AZ, 2Pac, and Canibus. I figured that Canibus deserves a spot after Rip the Jacker, Mic Club, etc., and that 2Pac was such a huge part to the game that he couldn’t be forgotten.

Surprised at how long “Top Five Rappers” took, I figured that with fifty minutes left in class a “Top Five Producers” was worth a shot. Right away, I came up with

Oh Yeah This Is Pretty Urgent: Someone NEEDS to hook me up with the instrumental for The Perceptionist’s “Breathe In The Sun”. In my opinion, it was one of the only good tracks on their cd, and the beat is beyond good. After hearing the original sample (although I forget what it was off the top of my head) there’s an incredible chop and sample use. Produced by Willie Evans Jr., I need this in my life. The trio from Hamburg Germany dropped their fantastically successful debut album “Deluxe Soundsystem” in 2000, after causing a lot of ruckus with their demos and various guest spots by their MC Samy Deluxe, famous for his battle-style raps and fondness of weed. Later, DJ Dynamite left the group and may be familiar to some of you as Joni Rewind whose great album “Welcome to the world” featured nuff cats from the UK, Jamaican and American scene. Samy Deluxe kept making albums with Tropf, the producer.
This instrumental album consists mainly of beats used on the first album and I’ve added the titles of the tracks they ended up on in brackets whenever I was able to make them out.
The king of understatement, Jehst, aka Billy Brimstone. MC, producer, founder of the Young’n’Restless (YNR) label. His rap style is the kind that sounds so effortlessly offhanded, you’d first think it’s not that special, really. But if you listen more closely… Tight from start to finish.

Samurai Champloo is this dope anime from the same guy who made Cowboy Bebop. Instead of jazz however, this series’ music has much more of a hip-hop appeal. These are my favorite albums from Madlib (given that I didn’t post the ones already up like Madvillainy). This dude is quite possibly the most versatile producer from the west coast, save Dr. Dre. This dude has also explored and expanded more than any other artist, ranging from hip-hop producer, to orchestrator, to jazz, to funk, this guy has basically done it all. These are all albums I’ve collected over the years, a lot of ’em rare and all of them fantastic. Enjoy, kids. Note: These albums are all on one file because I’m too lazy to upload them one by one.
Both of these are highly recommended. First up, we got Blockhead’s Music By Cavelight. (buy it here) If you haven’t heard of this guy, he does a lot of beats for Aesop Rock and the like. Good stuff here. Secondly, there’s a collection of instrumentals from the Sound Providers. All of these are available as VLS’s. Enjoy.
