In the late 1990’s, DJs Statik, Panek, Phillee Blunt, and J-Boogie were DJing parties all over the city of Philadelphia and it’s surrounding areas’ college and hip-hop communities. While learning the business and building relationships with many up and coming artists of the city at the time, they began taking themselves more serious and in the year 2000, decided to form the DJ crew Illvibe Collective. The goal of the newly formed team was to share as much new, quality music as possible and preserve the classics for those who were appreciative of the culture. This objective led the crew to begin a series of mixed CD compilations spanning across many genres including hip-hop, funk, broken beat, house, and more. In the spirit of some of the mixtape legends of the past, Illvibe requested that some of their affiliates record special verses for their CD releases. Some of the artists Illvibe had the privilege of recording included Bahamadia, Grand Agent, Supastition, Percee P, Hezekiah, Dave Ghetto, and Maylay Sparks just to name a few. These freestyles and exclusive songs provided some of the best standout moments for the group’s mixtape collection throughout the years.

We all know that Ice Cube, founding member of NWA and former “hardcore gangster rapper,” performs in family-friendly fluff comedy flicks aimed at the most mainstream of family audiences, but no one with any sense cuts him serious flack for that. Not only are the Friday and Barber Shop movies pretty great, but do you have any idea how big his bank account is by now? When it comes to music, what is the dude to do? It’s obviously his first love, but he has about three choices: to work with the Neptunes and try to update himself; to go completely middle America and do a Broadway revue or something; or he can do what he’s always done: flex his lyrical muscles, squint a lot, bark out some hardcore lines on top of slick hip-hop–you know, to try and restore his cred. A glance at the song titles will tell you which choice he made. It’s interesting to know that the very rich still have problems (“Child Support”) and even millionaires have to convince us all that they’re tough just like they did when they were broke-ass (“Why We Thugs”). There’s some real political commentary here, but it gets lost in uninspired beats and that super-dated style, genre… everything. It would seem that Cube’s producers forgot to tell him that no one really cares for that ’92 stuff anymore. –Mike McGonigal

It’s been entertaining to watch Ice Cube and Mike Epps pair up for a string of amusing urban comedies, such as “Friday After Next” and “All About the Benjamins.” Not stellar movies mind you, but passable comedies with big laughs and a laudable aim towards silliness. “The Janky Promoters” is their latest Hope and Crosby effort, but the chemistry is askew and the jester roles have unfortunately been equaled, resulting in a middling effort that should’ve been far more energetic and inspired than it actually is. Cube and Epps want a rap-world farce, but the film is winded from the starter pistol.

Russell Redds (Ice Cube) and Jellyroll (Mike Epps) are two Modesto, California concert promoters desperate for cash to pull off their latest show. Bringing rapper Young Jeezy and his entourage into town, Redds and Jellyroll scramble to cover their debts, taking money from loved ones and drug dealers to pay for the concert, putting themselves in harm’s way when they can’t follow through on their promises. With showtime fast approaching, everything has gone wrong, leaving the frantic promoters to cover their behinds when Young Jeezy revolts, threatening to take their hip-hop promotion dreams with him.
