Formed in 2001 and joined the ranks of The Movement, a posse lead by fellow Korean crew Drunken Tiger. Debuted in the end of 2003 with the “Map of the Human Soul” which made them one of the most popular new comers in the South Korean hip-hop scene.

Composed of three members, Tablo, Mithra and DJ Tukutz, Epik High is a hip-hop group with a perfect format of two MCs and one DJ. Their music is known to be as lyrical as a piece of literature and at the same time very witty and paradoxical. All three members of the band are singers and song-writers. Starting with composing melodies, the three members are all capable of writing lyrics and song arrangements. With their first album “Map pf the Human Soul” released earlier in 2004, the hip-hop band became popular immediately. Their 2nd album “High Society” was released in October the same year also receiving great responses.

Custom Made are on a mission to bring back L.A. hip-hop. And while Truth Be Told might set them up to do just that, it does so with a heavy East coast influence. First track, “Where It Goes Down”, is full of angry energy, each MC spitting their rhyme like its their last over heavy drums and lilting piano lines. It’s a song that would sound more at home on 36 Chambers than Straight Outta Compton. “Gutta Rap” slows things down, letting the rap group get more confessional without losing any of their venom. What makes Custom Made’s music distinctly West coast it its tales of life in L.A. And while the picture they paint isn’t a new one—drugs, gangs, violence—it is delivered with a healthy dose of both worry and love for the place Custom Made calls home. As an EP, though, Truth Be Told runs a little long—just over 45 minutes—and is crowded by nearly as man skits as there are songs. And the songs themselves are strong in their own right, but put together they sound a little too much like each other; the same heavy drums, the same piano, a few other flourishes here and there. The way these guys flow, which is as smooth and well-crafted as any other young rappers out there, goes a long way toward overlooking the songs’ sameness. But, now that Custom Made have their flow down, they might go back and sure up the hooks. This is an EP from a solid hip-hop group with a ton of potential, and they have a full-length due in the fall that’ll hopefully show just what they can do with all this talent.

The group 3rd Brillyance was formed in Germany in 2006 by members AlexChadwick and Madd Astronoma. The producer/MC duo met through a mutual friend. After low expectations of each others’ music they were blown away on the first listen and instantly knew they needed to work together. This chemistry is part of what makes their music so significant.

Both group members developed a passion for music at a young age. MC/ Producer AlexChadwick (who goes by his first and middle name) was born in Baton Rouge / Louisiana in 1983 where he grew up on artists like Master P, The Hot Boys, UGK, Eightball & MJG, just to name a few. Although being influenced by this kind of rap, listeners would describe his sound as east coast, underground or backpack. He started rapping at the age of 9 when he and his friends rhymed over beats played on drum sets made of buckets. His musical talent is evident in his mastery of the bass guitar and piano.

In 1986 Madd Astronoma (a name based on his interest in astronomy) was born in Japan as the child of members of the US Military and has travelled many places all over the planet. Growing up in North Carolina he played the saxophone for several years before being introduced to beat making by a friend in high school, which captured his interest. Once he came to Germany he started taking music more seriously. He is inspired by Hip Hop pioneers like J.Dilla, DJ Premier and others. His love for traditional instruments has an impact on his beats as you hear a lot of 70’s jazz and funk samples.

After combining their styles and making music for nearly a year a competition revealed by Rawkus records caught 3rd Brillyances’ attention. In February 2007 Rawkus announced the “Rawkus 50” competition where 50 independent rap artists would be chosen to release an album on Rawkus and given the opportunity to take their career from rapping on the corner to being supported by one of Hip Hops most trusted brands. 3rd Brillyance was one of the selected as their debut album “Grass Roots” will be released around September 2007 on Rawkus Records. On their future releases the duo will keep representing honest Hip Hop. Not striving for a commercialised sound, they will continue to give true music from their hearts, wanting for people to respect them and recognize that they really do it for the love of the music.

Their goal is to put out a brand of Hip Hop that would be timeless and help build the culture of Hip Hop for better causes. Inspired by life and the 3rd member of 3rd Brillyance (which happens to be none other than Music) this promising duo wants to take every opportunity given them and make the best of it.

Being fans of each others’ music they constantly inspire each other to step their game up and work to the best of their ability.

What’s up, fam? I haven’t done a big post like this in awhile so I wanted to make it special (think of it as a late Christmas present) since I haven’t made a real post in quite some time (before Christmas break). Nawl and Espiv may have noticed that I had a couple of ideas and drafts up in our “Posts” section, but none that I actually made anything out of. I had a “Best Of Vinyl” idea, which was going to be a compilation of recent classic hip-hop instrumentals I got from vinyl, but I get so much vinyl that the post would have been too huge for my schedule to handle (college). So today I started doing some searching and found that (what the…?) we don’t have that much RJD2 uploaded. There are some things, but we’re missing the biggest pieces to his collection. So anyways, let’s get rolling…

First off, this is a long post, so I uploaded two instrumentals for your listening pleasure, both by RJD2.

Moving on… I wanted to go above and beyond and include more than just RJD2’s mainstream releases like “Deadringer”, “The Horror”, etc. so I uploaded 3 vinyls and an instrumental mix. All of these vinyls are “missing” tracks, but that’s only because I have the “missing” tracks on other releases like “In Rare Form (Unreleased Instrumentals) Volume 2”, which is included in this post. But anyways, now that the disclaimer is out of the way… The first vinyl is the “Exotic Talk 12”. The “Exotic Talk 12” is really dope. It has an alternate version of the track “Exotic Talk” and two tracks exclusive to this vinyl, “Get Off My Spaceship Bitch” and “The Move”.

Speaking of dope tracks, the next vinyl is one that includes one of my favorite tracks, “June” by Copywrite. This vinyl is fucked up because it didn’t come with two tracks when I got it, but forget that. “June” is so ill. RJD2 is on the boards and he sets the mood, and when Copy gets on the mic, he rips it. iCON the Mic King criticized this track profusely during his beef with Copy, but I don’t think iCON was right at all. Copy leaves his punchline approach behind and demolishes the track with introspection. I didn’t know Copywrite was this deep, and it made me check his “The High Exalted”, which is definitely worth a listen. Two RJD2 instrumentals are included here, both of which deserve as much praise as the vocal versions of “June”.

Now for my favorite 12″ ever. The “Here’s What’s Left 12”. This includes a lot of epic shit. First of all, the vocal version of “Here’s What’s Left” is beautiful. I don’t know who that is crooning over RJD2’s genius instrumental, but it cools the soul. Turn this one up, light a blunt, and kick back. The instrumental version is nice to have, but isn’t quite as good as the vocal version. “Bonus Beat” and “Bonus Treat” are like 20 seconds each, but still dope. Those two are exclusive to this 12″. Along with this comes a remix for “2 More Dead” that’s not as good as the original, but still nice.

Okay, that’s all of the vinyl. Now it’s on to bigger things. First up is an exclusive CD that was included with preorders for “Since We Last Spoke”. This only has two tracks, each mixes, each about 15 minutes long. Now, RJD2 is amazing alone, but what if you assign one of the best electronic DJs to mix his work? Diplo mixes a bunch of RJD2’s work, and does a damn fine job. He adds his own signature style to some mixes so it’s really dope. That is enough to make my mouth water, but for the second track, a mysterious group called the Dakah Hip-Hop Orchestra mixes the second song. All I know about this group is that it’s composed of DJ Haul and Mason, and that they do live instrumentation. Either way, whoever the fuck they are, they do a damn good job of mixing RJD2’s shit.

Alright, so enough of the rare shit. Now we’re going into more of RJD2’s more well-known releases. These are releases that I consider some of the best instrumental hip-hop period. First is RJD2’s first solo release, “Deadringer”. I love this release; it has unlimited play value and sounds like a mature release, not a debut. When I first heard this album I was like, “What other albums has this guy done?” But to my surprise, this guy had only been around for about 4 years prior to this release, with only about 5-10 tracks floating around between 1998 and 2002. This is an incredible release in it’s own right; but since this is a first release that rivals most instrumental albums today, this album is quite an achievement.

So there’s RJD2’s first release, which came out of left field and made numerous 2002 top ten lists, and then there’s RJD2’s 2003 release, “The Horror”, that stuns everyone again, and puts him on 2003’s top ten lists. And what is it that makes this release so stunning? RJD2 did it with b-sides and remixes. He took old material from “Deadringer” and b-sides and remixed them, grabbed a bunch of b-sides and compiled them, re
leased what should have been a small compilation, and made it on to almost every indie top ten list that year. That’s how good this guy is; he didn’t even try to make it on the top ten lists of 2003 but still did. Holy shit, right?!

Let me start off this segment by saying that I love “Since We Last Spoke”. But I hate it. It is definitely a different direction than “Deadringer”. It’s a more rock-influenced direction. But that’s not why I hate it. Was it this album that led to “The Third Hand”? I don’t know. But take a look at the facts: “Deadringer” (hip-hop and funk-influenced), “The Horror” (hip-hop and funk-influenced), “Since We Last Spoke” (hip-hop, funk, and rock-influenced), and “The Third Hand” (electro-pop influenced). I think that “Since We Last Spoke” represents a slide, or a change in direction towards different things. Now I will say this… “Since We Last Spoke” is not as good as “Deadringer”. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a phenomenal album. This album is a step away from his DJ Shadow-esque style, but that gives it a little bit more individuality.

Besides releasing a lot of classic albums, and because of classic albums, RJD2 is quite a sought after producer. He has produced for eclectic artists to hardcore rappers to spoken-word artists, matching their vocals with his production beautifully each time. So “In Rare Form (Unreleased Instrumentals)” are instrumentals taken from his productions for artists like The Weatherman, Cannibal Ox, etc. Somewhere I picked up this gem though, “In Rare Form (Unreleased Instrumentals) Volume 2”. I would have posted the first part in the series but it was posted on this site before so I figured almost everyone had it. This release is really amazing though. These are vintage instrumentals (no loops) from what it sounds like, and are damn good instrumentals as well. Classics are all over this one. There’s a lot of remixes by RJD2, so a lot of goodness.

In Rare Form (Unreleased Instrumentals) Volume 2

“The Third Hand” is a release that got a lot of negative press. No one liked it. No one. I didn’t read any positive reviews for it. This is what I fucking meant! Deterioration! “The Third Hand” is possibly the most disappointing album I ever had the misfortune to listen to. I got an advance of it, so I listened to it before anyone could warn me, but I wish someone could’ve. I almost cried when I heard what happened to RJD2. As explained earlier, he went electro-pop. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard electro-pop, but if you like the boom bap beats on this site, than you will want to throw up if you hear “The Third Hand”. That being said, “The Third Hand Instrumentals” isn’t a bad album by any means. The mistake people make is that the instrumentals are shitty because they hear RJD2 whining over them. But give this album a listen and tell me what you think. I think of this album as an electronic album. It’s different than any of RJD2’s other releases, but it has it’s moments, and is definitely worth having in your collection. Just please… Don’t make the mistake of giving the vocal version, “The Third Hand”, a chance. It’s not worth it.

What better way to describe this album than to simply quote a couple paragraphs from a recent ScholarMan article titled “What’s Your Purpose?”, one of the inspirations for the album:

“No matter what faith you follow, every person’s existence is because of a greater purpose assigned to that individual. For some people their purpose may be small, to others extremely large, regardless we were born to do something positive to contribute to the great mass of energy this world generates. As a writer, I contribute ideas on paper, as an emcee I contribute my life experiences through music and as a producer I contribute various emotions through rhythm. What is your purpose?

Since hip-hop runs through my veins just as naturally as the blood that keeps me alive, it is only correct to use the state of hip-hop to describe my point. Point being, many people who represent this culture are doing so in vain. Many artists are degrading not only themselves, but also their heritage as well as the art form with much of the music presented. Over the past twenty years, the hip-hop I love has drastically declined where one could feel alienated by simply listening to the radio today. “

Soul Purpose according to ScholarMan is “simply good hip-hop music that encourages people to define their purpose and work towards the necessary goals that flow parallel with this process.” With the underground success of Candy Medicine, ScholarMan wanted to ensure that his message on Soul Purpose is just as clear as the releases before it but with an improved sound and overall album structure. “Many artists get complacent with their craft, that’s not my style. I will always give you 100% of me but with improvements, and more innovation with every album,” ScholarMan states.

Soulful beats, intelligent lyrics, this is destined to be another classic to add to your collection. Look for Soul Purpose sometime in January of 2008 released on Soganic Music/ScholarMan Music featuring over 10 self-produced tracks and an appearance by label mate TrueBless.

After 5 years of development Jinxx McCloud’s not for profit indi label En Tia Sing Sounds Presentings the new full length album “En Tia Sing” (en~ti~cing). The album exhibits 21 songs with zero filler tracks! Experimentation, adaptation and open ended original direction and approach to music have been some of the guidelines used by Jinxx for this album. From an early age Jinxx �the chimney� McCloud developed a profound interest in music as a way of self expression and release. Seeing that music has harbored a broad array of influence on societies around the world has Jinxx brings a new recipe for incorporating many genres of music into a single album Jinxx has always placed the true expression of the spirit reflected in ones creativity with music as a much higher priority than commerce. To �The Chimney� being original and open minded about music is far superior to channeling the music creativity thru trends and marketing in order to get popular and rich from, sell units. That is why in 2007 Indi label en tia sing sounds was created in order to release the collection in its entirety, unfiltered and free from industry pressures and controls. This collection has been growing in McCloud�s lab over the past 5 years of development to strengthen its broadly different styles and influences from over a large time period.

As an mc Jinxx McCloud began his journey 10 years ago with a tape recorder and a goal. That goal was to gather equipment piece by piece, develop hundreds of verses in his lyrical library, and to one day release a full length album of professional quality with influences and genre blending that has never been released before. Being original and true to ones self has been the only restriction applied to his musical development.

As a producer Jinxx McCloud developed thru hundreds of productions for the 1999 – 2001 group Elevated Mindstate in which he was the exclusive producer and one of 3 mc�s. Later Jinxx became heavily influenced by drum and bass music which added another dimension to the productions “The Chimney” was to later use for development for this album. Later spending time in england and holland with uk drum and bass producer and mentor Q-Trax Jinxx further developed his productions. Q-Trax has a production which was originally to be featured on an Elevated Mindstate track recorded in 2001 titled �that ish�. This is the most dated track on the album yet the quality is right with many very new tunes.

As a DJ Jinxx has been mixing and scratching for over 10 years now, all scratching done on this release were done by Jinxx. Blending different genres of music as a DJ with the deep foundations Jinxx has with Hip Hop has proven to be interesting.

As a songwriter Jinxx has been working on another project with even more experimentation with acoustic instruments over the past several years. Planned to be complete summer of 2008.
